Venice Gardens is established neighborhood

Venice Gardens is a well-established neighborhood in Venice, Florida, located near some of the city’s amenities. “Venice Gardens is a unique neighborhood because it’s divided into two sections,” says Realtor Jo-Anne Sckowska with Michael Saunders & Company. “When they started building homes, there were no deed restrictions. I call it ‘The Land of the Toys.’ Bring your boat, bring your motor home, and you can park it at your house. That’s a nice thing; we have a lot of people who like that.” That makes up about three-fourths of the neighborhood. The rest of the community is covered by a homeowners association with a mild deed restriction. “You get that nice look without boats or anything like that,” Sckowska says. “Those homes are larger, as well.” Downtown Venice and the shoreline are about 4 miles away. The Chabad of Venice Center for Jewish Life is less than 1 mile away and is the primary gathering place for the Jewish community in the city.

Most homes do not have deed restrictions

The curvy streets of Venice Gardens are lined with palm and oak trees, and wildlife is often seen in front lawns or standing by the lake. Because most properties are not deed-restricted, apart from some houses in the eastern part of the neighborhood, residents are able to decorate their lawns as they please. Backyard pools, often protected from critters by pool cages, are common. Traditional and Mediterranean-influenced ranch-style homes were built between the 1950s and 1980s. Realtor Kathleen Stansfield with Exit King Realty says that most have an “Old Florida” feel. “What that means is, most of these houses, when they were built, were two bedrooms, one bathroom, one-car garage,” she says. “Tiny, 1200 square feet or less. So, a lot of people add on to them around the back, so you don’t necessarily see it.” There are also some new traditional houses. Prices range from $250,000 to $400,000 for a two-bedroom, while larger homes range from $450,000 to $600,000. There is no homeowners association for most properties, although residents can join the voluntary Venice Gardens Civic Association, which manages the community pool and community center. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that Sarasota County has a very high risk of hurricanes. However, there is a relatively low risk of flooding.

High school performing arts center hosts professional groups

Venice Gardens is part of Sarasota County Schools, which offers school choice. The neighborhood is zoned for Garden Elementary School, Venice Middle School and Venice High School. All three receive an A-minus from Niche. The Venice Performing Arts Center, which is managed by the Venice Institute for Performing Arts (VIP), houses the high school’s performing arts department and hosts lectures and shows. The VIP Arts Academy opens its apprenticeship program to students, allowing them to get hands-on experience in performance-related roles like lighting, sound and box office work.

Cars and buses on Tamiami Trail

Venice Gardens residents rely on their cars to get around and can easily access U.S. Route 41. Also called Tamiami Trail, this major throughway leads to Downtown Venice and 27 miles to Downtown Sarasota. Breeze offers a bus route along the highway, offering some public transportation between Venice and Sarasota. Most people fly out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, about 30 miles away, although the nearby Venice Municipal Airport is available for private flights. Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Venice campus is about 5 miles north of the neighborhood.

Venice Gardens lakes and nearby parks

There are several manmade lakes scattered throughout Venice, set low enough that they do not flood during heavy rain. “You’ll see people out there fishing from a kayak or a canoe,” Stansfield says. There is a shaded playground at the nearby Woodmere Park, as well as a dog park and basketball park. Golfers can play the 18 holes at Jacaranda West Country Club. Many residents also head downtown to Centennial Park, where they can run through the splash pad or catch a concert or movie night at the park’s gazebo. The sandy shores of Venice’s beaches are only about 4 miles away. There, people can spend time on the water or fishing off of the Venice Fishing Pier. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen, ranging from seabirds and dolphins to nesting marine turtles. At the Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Library, patrons can attend club meetings and crafting sessions or explore the extensive collection of books.

Nearby Downtown Venice and commercial strip

Residents often head into Downtown Venice, about 4 miles away, where they can find an array of locally owned boutiques, gift shops and eateries. “Most of the places are mom-and-pop places,” says Robert Goldman, Realtor with Michael Saunders and Company. Upper Crust Cafe and Bakery is known for its scones and Devonshire cream, and Trattoria Da Mino is one of several Italian restaurants in the area. At the Venice Farmers Market, vendors sell fresh bread, produce, and seafood every Saturday morning. Along Tamiami Trail, people are more likely to find chains and franchises. “It’s a commercial strip; it can be anything from shopping centers to restaurants to tire shops and body shops,” Goldman says. Publix is less than 1 mile outside of the neighborhood and is near Walmart, Target and Home Depot.

Venice Gardens Civic Association hosts community events

With citywide events and gatherings hosted by the neighborhood’s civic association, residents can often find something to do. “Venice itself is a hub for activity,” Stansfield says. In April, Downtown Venice draws in people from all over for the Sharks Tooth Festival. There, tourists and locals alike enjoy live music, food and activities for all ages. At the kids’ zone, children can get their faces painted and go hunting for shark teeth. The Downtown Venice Craft Festival is held every January, where local artists display and sell their wares. The Venice Gardens Civic Association hosts several community gatherings throughout the year, including plant and bake sales, line dancing lessons and seasonal events like a Halloween trunk or treat.
