A vibrant neighborhood undergoing rebirth
The tides are turning in Northeast D.C.’s Ward 5, where one island-inspired neighborhood is making waves. Trinidad, named by a 19th-century landowner with a particular affinity for the Caribbean locale, embodies its tropical namesake through vivid murals and artwork. “This is a tremendously diverse neighborhood. There are lots of new places to live and a lot of new restaurants and nightlife,” says Marc Dosik, an Associate Broker with Century 21 Redwood Realty who has extensive experience in the area. This vibrant community prides itself on connection. Bloggers, columnists and engaged citizens maintain a rich online network of community updates, happenings and hyperlocal quips to keep the neighborhood in living color. “One of the most wonderful things about the neighborhood is its proximity to Gallaudet and all of the amenities that come with living near a major university. A lot of students and faculty live in the area,” says Realtor Dosik. Adjacent to Gallaudet University and less than 2 miles from the U.S. Capitol and National Mall, Trinidad offers residents vitality, history and a close-knit community.

Row houses and hip new homes
Development of Trinidad’s residential space kicked off in the early 1940s. Starting in the north, the flood of Victorian- and Craftsman-style row houses soon became the predominant home styles. Most of the original row houses in the neighborhood feature expansive front porches where early residents would sit to escape summer heat. They were the perfect spot for neighbors to chat and pass the time. Even today, these lovely “stoops” (as they’re known locally) are popular places for locals to get to know one another. While row houses are still the primary architectural design here, newer builds have introduced fresh new style and character to the tree-lined streets. Home prices range from about $250,000 for a 1-bedroom interior townhouse unit to around $1.9 million for a 4-bedroom Federal-style townhouse with a welcoming porch and large back patio.

Calypso Ice Cream & Coffee is a vibrant hangout serving aromatic roasts, frosty treats and pastries from local bakeries. The corner shop’s embellished walls craft a colorful story reminiscent of the Trinidad Carnival in the Port of Spain. Just on the other side of Gallaudet, Union Market is home to more than 40 shops and restaurants. “Union Market is now the busiest market in the city. It’s become a popular tourist destination,” says Dosik. The Market is home to Bidwell Restaurant, a responsibly sourced restaurant offering original dishes such as Gin & Tonic Salmon and Lobster Tacos.

It is ok. I know of friends who have been robbed on the way home, and occasionally I will hear gun shots in my neighborhood. I have never been the victim of a crime here, so I don't consider it too bad yet.

It goes through all the seasons. In the summer it can get really hot, and that is when everyone who is from north of DC complains. In the winter it can get very cold, and that is when everyone from the south of DC complains.

There is a good amount of public transport services available, and DC makes good use out of the private company services (Capital Bikeshare, Uber, etc.). Many parts of the city are kept clean, so they have a good waste management system in place. Unfortunately, the city still does not know how to handle snow fall very well.

Many of the local businesses reach out to niche audiences. They have the opportunity compete in specific markets since many of the bigger business that you find in other cities and towns do not have a large presence here. This means that you do not have many one-stop shops here, and the few that are here are not that great.
