Growing suburban city outside of Ogden

West Haven is an expansive city about 5 miles west of Ogden. Founded in 1991 after merging the Kanesville and Wilson communities, West Haven’s landscape originally consisted of agricultural fields and dairy farms. The city has since gone from 2,000 people to a population of over 23,000. “It’s growing like crazy,” says Realtor Kimberly Green with Besst Realty Group, who has 5 years of experience. “There’s not as much space on the east side of Ogden anymore, so everyone’s moving west.”

The primary industries in West Haven are manufacturing, construction and city works. Larger employers include West Haven City, Granite Construction, Kilgore Companies and Geneva Rock Products.

Craftsman homes populate new subdivisions

Residential areas in West Haven are a mix of newer subdivisions and neighborhoods from the 1990s and mid-2000s. Housing types on the city's outskirts, near Kanesville and Wilson, consist of multi-story Craftsman homes and modern townhouses. Central West Haven neighborhoods have a larger variety, including ranch-style homes, patio homes, split levels and communities of manufactured housing. “You’re going to have a big mixture of everything,” says Realtor Sarah Schelin with Ascent Real Estate Group, who lives on the border of West Haven and has 10 years of experience. “We do have older farmhouses that have been here forever, but then a couple of blocks down the road you can have a brand-new neighborhood.” The median price for a single-family home is $586,000, while the median price for a townhouse is $390,000. The city’s listing price range is between $345,000 and $1.2 million.

City parks and recreational facilities

Subdivisions with new constructions are sprawled across the city, though the area’s outdoor recreation remains abundant. There are 13 designated city parks in West Haven, from playgrounds and fields to a dog park. Windsor Farms Park has a disc golf course and a fishing pond, while Prevedel Park has an amphitheater. There’s also a rodeo arena in West Haven County Park. Additionally, the River Parkway Trail winds throughout the city’s landscape.

Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area is a 20,000-acre wetland and nature preserve along the Great Salt Lake. About 27 miles east is the Snowbasin Resort.

A quality education from Weber County Schools

West Haven is served by the Weber School District, which serves over 32,900 students across 47 public schools and earns a B grade from Niche. Of these, two elementary schools and one junior high school are located in West Haven. There’s also one charter school and one private school for kindergarten through eighth grade. Students living in the city are zoned for West Field High School, the newest high school in the district that opened its doors in the 2024-2025 school year, which is located in nearby Taylor. “It feels safe here. You still see kids walking home from school,” Schelin says.

Retail and restaurants along 1900 and Midland Drive

West Haven has two commercial corridors along 1900 West and Midland Drive. These retail areas have small businesses and services that range from home improvement to auto shops. There are a handful of locally owned diners, coffee shops, international eateries, casual American restaurants and bars. There are also various fast-food options and chain restaurants. “You do have to travel a bit for shopping and dining. There are some bigger chains, like Starbucks and gas stations, but there’s not a lot in West Haven itself,” Schelin says. Midland Drive has the area’s only regional grocery store, Midland Express Gasoline & Groceries. Ogden is about 5 miles away with national retailers and big box stores.

Navigating in and around West Haven

West Haven is primarily car-dependent. “There’s a lot of farmland and distance between neighborhoods, so it’s not walkable,” Schelin says. Interstate 15 is the area’s main highway system and can take drivers 40 miles to Salt Lake City. The Utah Transit Authority’s FrontRunner commuter rail line is accessible at Roy Station, about 3 miles away. Planes and jets are often seen flying overhead from the Ogden-Hinckley Airport and Hill Air Force Base. Travelers are more likely to head to the Salt Lake City International Airport for commercial flights.

Four seasons and low crime

West Haven’s semi-arid climate ensures the city's residents experience all four seasons, including an annual snowfall of 34 inches. The city may also be at risk for potential wildfires. As such, it contracts with the Weber Fire District for fire protection through Station 63, and the Weber County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement.

According to FBI Crime Data, from 2020 to 2023, the sheriff’s office has reported violent crime rates below state and national crime averages. Property crime rates were also below state and national averages, with a 47% decrease from December 2022 to 2023.
