The home of Kennywood

Down the Monongahela River, southeast of Pittsburgh, West Mifflin is an Allegheny County borough home to one of the country’s oldest amusement parks. Of course, life in West Mifflin isn’t structured around fun and games — it’s just ideally situated to enjoy them. “A lot of people who live in West Mifflin were born and raised there,” says Kim Stotlemyer, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “It’s a really quiet, friendly, tight-knit community. Once you’re in, you stay, or you come back at some point. I just sold a home to someone who bought back their childhood home.”

Midcentury and classic American architecture

Most homes in West Mifflin were initially built in either 1940s, ‘50s, ‘60s or ‘70s. These decades brought classic American architectural styles — Cape Cods and American Foursquares — to the borough. The vinyl-sided simplicity of Minimal Traditional architecture and brick-faced Colonial Revivals are also popular designs, while raised ranch-style homes and bungalows are staple builds. By the river, on the community’s east side, residential space is more densely populated, so homes sit closer together on smaller lots. Lots get larger on the west side, allowing for bigger yards. Overall, the borough's median lot size is just under a fifth of an acre. “You can get a nice house for your money in that area,” Stotlemyer says. “The average price is $200,000 to $250,000, compared to the $400,000 to $500,000 price range in downtown Pittsburgh or Lawrenceville.” List prices range between $65,000 and $358,000.
