Vehicles breezing by on Interstate 80 can take Exit 34 to land in the industrial area of Wharton, a borough of Morris County about 40 miles west of New York City. Plenty of commercial shopping opportunities greet residents right off the highway, while residential pockets and local restaurants begin to appear when driving farther into the neighborhood on Main Street. There are also several parks and outdoor spaces around this historic canal town, with Lake Hopatcong just 8 miles to the west. The parks and quiet, walkable streets of Wharton offer a small-town, communal feel, while highway access helps to support the suburb’s commuters. “Although, Wharton is more of a working-class community than a commuter town, where residents typically work locally,” says Virginia Michelin, Assistant Planning Director at Morris County Planning & Preservation Board.

Gridded streets with colonials and townhomes
Sidewalks and trees line many of the residential streets in Wharton. There are 1,300- to 1,900-square-foot Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style homes, often with detached garages and sunroom additions, in the $400,000 to $500,000 price range. In the northeastern part of the neighborhood near the shopping mall and other retail is Townsquare Village, where 1,600-square-foot townhomes sell for around $450,000. Another townhouse community is being built in central Wharton, where 1,800- to 2,100-square-foot homes with attached garages and open-concept floor plans will sell for about $500,000.

In the northern part of Wharton, right off the interstate, there’s a Costco, ShopRite, Walmart, Target and the Rockaway Townsquare shopping mall. Canal Day at Hugh Force Park
Several parks and open green spaces span across Wharton. Hugh Force Canal Park offers a playground and a 2-mile scenic trail along the town’s former boat channel, Morris Canal. Locals gather annually at the park for Canal Day, a music and craft festival with live music and even a traveling zoo. Near the downtown area, Wharton Memorial Park has a paved walking path around memorabilia honoring Vietnam and Korean War veterans. “Robert Street Park has a playground, baseball fields, football fields and tennis courts. Many little league teams play there,” Michelin adds. “And Hedden Park is just south of Wharton, where there are biking and hiking trails, as well as scenic backdrops for weddings and photos.”

B-graded Wharton public schools
The Wharton Borough School District and the Dover Public School District serve students living in Wharton. Younger learners can benefit from a 9-1 student-teacher ratio at Marie V. Duffy Elementary School, which receives a B-minus Niche grade. They can then progress to a 10-1 student-teacher ratio at Alfred C. MacKinnon Middle School, also graded a B-minus on Niche. Older students can attend Dover High School, which receives a B-minus and is ranked among the Best High Schools for STEM in the state, according to Niche.
According to Niche, Duffy Elementary School receives a B- overall grade.

Haunts and hospitals
Northwest, right off the Wharton exit, 13th Hour Haunted House is open all year long, with escape rooms and a haunted hatchets game room. Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital is in the southern part of the neighborhood, less than a mile from the downtown area.
An abundance of thoroughfare
Interstate 80 runs along the northern part of Wharton, and U.S. Route 15 runs through the neighborhood. The Dover train station is less than 2 miles east, and many New Jersey Transit bus stops line Main Street and U.S. Route 46, which runs along the southern edge of Wharton. Conveniently located near shopping and dining off the interstate, with several parks and green spaces near the area’s residential pockets, this Morris County suburb maintains its strong sense of community.
Dover station operates year-round, and its ticket booth is open 24/7.
