Acres of farmland near Blue Mountain
Established in 1752 after the organization of Northampton County, Heidelberg Township is a rural Allentown suburb that spans 26 square miles in the northwest corner of Lehigh County. The township has the third-most preserved farmland in Lehigh County, with 56 farms covering almost 4,000 acres of preserved land, a little less than 5% of the land. The township is just south of Blue Mountain and is home to Bake Oven Knob, which is the highest point in the county.
“Heidelberg Township is very rural,” says Randy Beitler, an associate broker with Fredrick Group of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who has been in real estate for 15 years. “However, people are still looking to move here. If you are into biking and hiking, it is perfect because fewer cars are on the roads, and there are multiple trails and paths to take advantage of.”
Homes in the hills
Rolling and winding roads cut through acres of farmland and mature trees. Older ranch styles and Colonial Revivals are spread out throughout the township. Prices range from $277,000 to $770,000, but buyers can expect a three-bedroom ranch-style to sell for about $280,000, while a three-bedroom colonial will be around $365,000. “The market here is still solid, however. It has an even lower inventory than most places, so when things are listed properly, they fly off the market,” Beitler says.

Get outside
The largest park in Lehigh County, Trexler Nature Preserve, was donated to the county by General Harry C. Trexler following his death. Today, the preserve offers over 18 miles of trails for wildlife observation, hiking, walking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The Covered Bridge Trail is ADA-accessible, and the path allows anglers to reach Jordan Creek for a day on the water. Living in Heidelberg is an outdoor person’s dream, with proximity to the Appalachian Trail, Bake Oven Knob and Knife’s Edge. All three places offer various trails for hiking and mountain biking.
Mom-and-pop shops and eateries
Residents can head to the Weis Market in the neighboring North Whitehall Township for groceries and other household needs. The township has some mom and pop restaurants, including Curious Goods at the Bake Oven Inn, a farm-to-table experience that opened in 2007. Another local favorite is Don Corleone’s Restaurant, which serves pizzas and other Italian fare.

Lesson plans
Children will attend the Northwestern Lehigh School District, which scores a B on Niche. The district serves a little more than 2,000 students and has a 98% graduation rate. Students will attend Northwestern Elementary, Northwestern Lehigh Middle and Northwestern Lehigh High School. The elementary school scores a C-plus, the middle school grades a B, and the high school is a B-plus on Niche. Students who attend a district school each get their own personal Chromebook to support their learning and instruction through the 1:1 Technology Program.

Getting around town
With no public transportation, residents in Heidelberg are car-dependent. Drivers can take advantage of Mountain Road, which eventually connects to Interstate 476, the northeast corridor of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Two state routes, PA-100 and PA-309, are the main thoroughfares in the township.
Social Gatherings
Many local clubs and churches organize yearly community events. One of the largest each year is the Pioneer Apple Fest, which takes place at Ontenaunee Park in New Tripoli. The event features live music and offers food options from numerous local restaurants featuring their best apple dishes.

With the number of German settlers that settled in Pennsylvania, the state has four Heidelberg Townships. The above content pertains to the one in Lehigh County, but three other townships bare the same name in Berks County, Lebanon County and York County.
