A historic suburb of Winston-Salem
Less than two miles southwest of downtown Winston-Salem, Ardmore is a quiet, historic neighborhood with tree-lined streets, early 20th-century homes and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Ardmore grew out of Salem’s strong economic growth of the early 1900s, which produced affluent households that often employed housekeepers, chefs, gardeners, and drivers. Because of this, many homes in the area were built with live-in apartments. But household workers also lived in smaller homes in surrounding neighborhoods, so architectural styles in the area range from large Queen Anne to small cottage-style homes. The cities of Winston and Salem—69 miles northeast of Charlotte and 92 miles west of Raleigh—merged in 1913, and Ardmore was born shortly after. Today, with more than 2,200 homes, Ardmore is one of the state’s largest historic districts. Yet, it is still a place where neighbors enjoy coming together for an art walk, where residents rent out their yards for local artists to display and sell their paintings, drawings and other visual works. “In all honesty, one of the best parts of living in Ardmore is how friendly everyone is,” says Sean Holstead, a ten-year resident of Ardmore. “Every person I’ve talked to loves being here.”

Quarter-acre lots, bungalows and cottages
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the essence of early 1900s architecture is still evident in this community, even today. Architectural stylings include Queen Anne, Foursquare, Bungalow, and Craftsman-style homes. Smaller bungalows and cozy cottages are the more common house styles in Ardmore, many from the 1920s and ‘30s and sitting on quarter-acre plots of land, though late 20th-century ranch-style homes are interspersed throughout the neighborhood. With a median price of $315,000, home prices in Ardmore range from $150,000 for a two-bedroom ranch-style home in need of renovation and asbestos removal to $595,000 for a four-bedroom Colonial Revival with French-inspired dentils and eaves.

Spuds at Goody’s Grill
“A big reason I moved here is the convenience,” says Halstead. “There are a lot of grocery stores and restaurants, and Atrium Health is right next to us.” The area has national chains like Walmart and Chick-fil-A, but also offers local shops and restaurants. On the neighborhood's west side, on Bethesda Road Southwest, Goody's Grill is known for baked potatoes—or Spuds—like their Fried Shrimp Spud or their Gyro Spud. On Peters Creek Parkway in Ardmore’s east side, Mayflower Seafood serves fare such as homemade clam chowder or broiled flounder. Fleet Feet Sports, a North Carolina sporting goods store with locations in Clemons and Winston-Salem, has a location on the west side of the neighborhood on Harvey Street.

A community of people who love art
“There’s a very active neighborhood association,” says Halstead. “It’s not a homeowner’s association, but they put together a lot of activities throughout the year.” Events are organized by the Ardmore Neighborhood Association, though often without a specific date. The neighborhood events channel the area’s close-knit community feel, says Halstead. “One big one is called the Ardmore Art Walk. People will actually rent out their yards for local artists to sell their work, and this all takes up maybe four or five blocks. Last year, upwards of a thousand people showed up.” The Ardmore Art Walk is typically held in the fall. The Neighborhood Association keeps residents updated about this and other events through its website and social media channels. While there are no museums within Ardmore, the neighborhood is less than three miles from downtown Winston-Salem, which boasts art spots like the Delurk Gallery and Artworks Gallery.
Wiley Magnet Middle School adds arts to make STEAM
Ardmore students can begin their education at Brunson Elementary School, which offers STEM programs like a robotics club and a science fair and earns a B-plus on Niche. For grades six through eight, students can attend Wiley Magnet Middle School, which incorporates the arts into their STEM programs—making them STEAM—and earns a B-minus. Reynolds High School opened in 1923 and holds two buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As a magnet school for the arts, Reynolds offers students a chance to take advanced arts courses and participate in highly regarded internship opportunities. Reynolds earns a grade of B-plus.

Bocce ball at Miller Park
Ardmore has many options for residents hoping to get active and enjoy the outdoors. “Miller Park has a great community center and two fields, a smaller one and a larger baseball field,” says Halstead. “There’s a playground too, an amphitheater and an area for games like bocce ball and horseshoes.” The neighborhood also has Bolton Park, which offers a pool and a shaded exercise area, and Washington Park is just under a mile and a half to the east. Salem Creek runs along the neighborhood's south side and reaches into Washington Park. Also to the south, Heather Hills Golf Course offers a challenging, 18-hole golf course open to the public.

Winston-Salem buses and plenty of space for walking
Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus routes travel through Ardmore with stops along the area’s major roads. The area also has sidewalks along many of its tree-lined roads, making it a neighborhood where walking or running is an option. Drivers also don’t have far to travel to reach downtown Winston-Salem, as the most common routes from the neighborhood into the city are less than three miles.
