Quiet community close to the action of Downtown Winston-Salem
Overlooking Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 421Close to a slew of retailers, restaurants and recreation, South Fork is highly sought-after for its convenient location. “It’s a centrally located area, you’re about 15 to 20 minutes away from anywhere in Winston-Salem here,” says Realtor Jason McDougald of Leonard Ryden Burr Real Estate, who has worked with several clients buying and selling homes in the neighborhood. He adds that price is also a selling point, but a minor one compared to location. “It’s just a good place to raise a family. That’s why I moved back here from Northern Virginia. You’re not far from shopping, from parks, and the traffic here is nothing compared to NoVA.” Decades-long South Fork Recreation Leader Zach Gordon agrees. “South Fork is definitely a quieter neighborhood. A lot of people enjoy walking and overall like to keep to themselves. Regardless, if you want to turn up the heat, you’re still a hop and a skip from downtown.”

Well-maintained homes with good bones
Housing architecture ranges from classic late-midcentury split-levels and ranch-style bungalows to 1980s condos and early-2000s-era Traditional homes. Standalone, single-family homes sell for between $270,000 and $640,000, while condo units run anywhere from $110,000 to $245,000. The difference in price for both single-family homes and condos depends mainly on size; smaller homes/units fall on the lower end of the spectrum and larger ones fall on the high end. Age and condition also factor into the sale price of the neighborhood’s single-family homes, but McDougald observes that those two things don’t always go hand in hand. “An older home may go for more than a newer home, just because it’s been really well-maintained. People seem to be seeking out houses with good bones these days; they’re not necessarily looking for the newest house on the block.”

Middle and high schools offer STEAM and arts-focused magnet programs
South Fork students attend schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County district. Many go to South Fork Elementary, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. It’s within 2 miles of most homes. Secondary students may continue to Wiley Magnet Middle, which receives a B-minus, and R.J. Reynolds High, which gets a B-plus. The middle school offers a STEAM magnet program that emphasizes classes in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. At Reynolds High, students in the Arts for Academics Magnet School program can choose between arts-intensive, arts-infused or arts-aware pathways. Arts-intensive track students audition for placement in advanced courses and participate in internships, while the arts-infused path requires students to take at least three arts electives. Students following the arts-aware track receive arts exposure through attending campus-wide drama/musical performances and arts integration in the classroom.

Across the street from Panthers Field, South Fork Park has a shady playground, picnic areas, a tennis court and an exercise course. The South Fork Community Center offers indoor recreation in the form of a kitchen and computer lab, as well as art, exercise and special interest programs. Right next door, Cricket’s Nest Craft Shop sells hand-made goods by local seniors aged 55 and up. They pay annual membership fees to display and sell their work. Shopping and dining on Country Club Road or Hanes Mall Boulevard
Residents can head to Food Lion or Dollar General for groceries and everyday essentials. Both stores are on Country Club Road, the main thoroughfare that runs through the middle of South Fork, within 2 miles of most homes. Additionally, there’s a shoe store, a couple of gas stations, and a Triad Municipal ABC Store near the Dollar General. The area houses specialty shops such as House of Cards, which sells tabletop games and accessories, and The Train Loft, a model train store. Since 2006, O’Brien’s Deli has remained a local favorite for sandwiches, soups and salads. McDougald says many locals also frequent Hanes Mall Boulevard and Interstate 40 business corridors, a few miles south, for shopping and dining. The area is teeming with big box retailers and chain restaurants, including Walmart Supercenter, Target and Olive Garden, to name a few.
