Residents of the Bernon District of Woonsocket have immediate access to local restaurants, chain eateries and big-box retailers. The architecture is generally comprised of buildings from the early 1900s to the 1960s. There are also public greenspaces where residents enjoy recreation.

A two-bedroom, one-bathroom 1960s single-family home with a vinyl exterior is valued at around $280,000. A four-bedroom 1950s home with enough yard space for an above-ground swimming pool, a trampoline and a shed is valued at around $380,000. A newly built three-bedroom contemporary with a vinyl exterior is valued at around $507,000. “Woonsocket hasn’t changed much over the past 10-to-20 years,” says Marilyn Bennett, an agent with Salzberg Real Estate who has sold multiple homes in the area. “There’s not a lot of new development because the area has already been developed. Woonsocket was built in the early 1900s.”

Many children are educated at Bernon Heights Elementary School, which has a C-minus Niche rating and a 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. “Kids can walk to the local elementary school,” says Bennett. Villa Nova Middle School has a C Niche rating and a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Woonsocket High School has a C Niche rating. The high school also has a school improvement team made up of administrators, teachers and parents who meet monthly to make plans for how to keep making the student experience better.

The area has a wide selection of restaurants. Al’s Place is a popular local breakfast spot. It has a casual atmosphere where you can chat with the owners as they grill your home-style meal on the other side of the counter. Ye Olde English Fish & Chips is another popular spot for its clam strips, lobster rolls and chicken. It has been in the same family for the 102 years it has been open. The area also has many chain restaurants such as Texas Roadhouse, McDonald’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The south end of the Bernon District has big-box stores including Kohl’s, Lowe’s, PetSmart and Walmart. Many locals shop for groceries at Aldi and the Stop & Shop. There is also an AutoZone and a Planet Fitness. The area has access to green spaces where locals enjoy recreation. Booth Pond Conservation Area has a 2.4-mile trail loop. The 130-acre parcel of deciduous forest and wetlands is popular among bird watchers. Locals also spend time at Bernon Park, which has two baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a hockey rink and a playground. Woonsocket Little League plays games at Bernon Park. “Woonsocket is a place where people know their neighbors,” says Bennett. “People tend to become part of the area and stay for long periods of time.”

Woonsocket is within the Providence Metropolitan Area and immediately south of the Massachusetts state line. Residents travel 16 miles via RI-146 to Providence, 27 miles via MA-146 to Worcester and 53 miles via I-95 to Boston. Locals also take a public bus when commuting to Providence.

Many people enjoy shows at the Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre & Conservatory, a 1926 vaudeville-era theatre. Cover artists of Cher, Prince and Elvis perform there. The venue is also used for community theater. Residents go to the Museum of Work & Culture to glean knowledge of the city’s textile manufacturing history. The museum highlights the stories of immigrants who came to Woonsocket in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to live and work in the mill town. CVS Health’s corporate headquarters is in Woonsocket. The city is also home to the American-French Genealogical Society.
