Alamo residence enjoy mountain biking at Mount Diablo State Park.
An East Bay community in the shadow of Mount Diablo
Named for the poplar trees surrounding San Ramon Creek, Alamo is a quiet, scenic community in the East Bay known for its abundant outdoor recreation. “It’s a very down-to-earth community driven toward health, wellness and fitness because of all the hiking and outdoors. You’ve also got great schools, both public and private. It’s a huge reason that people are moving here,” says Realtor Jill Fusari, a luxury home specialist with The Agency who has lived in Alamo for more than 20 years. The weather is another reason people tend to move here. “We’re in a microclimate that’s sunnier and warmer than some of the surrounding areas, especially in the evenings,” says Fusari. This unincorporated community of about 15,000 people sits between the rolling hills of the Las Trampas Ridge and the towering Mt. Diablo. It’s a primarily residential community along Interstate 280, offering easy access to nearby cities like Danville and Walnut Creek.
Hiking and biking at state and regional East Bay parks
Alamo shines when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors. The area is surrounded by large swaths of scenic, protected land, such as the 20,000-acre Mount Diablo State Park, with near-endless hiking trails to explore. Residents can drive to the 3,849-foot summit on South Gate Road, just southeast of the community, while the Macedo Ranch Staging Area is another entrance to the park, just with no vehicle access. Visitors can hike or ride horses on the trails through the gently sloping hills. Opposite Mount Diablo are the wooded trails at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Park, a 5,800-acre park where squirrels, foxes and skunks roam the ridgelines. In the heart of the community is Hap Magee Ranch Park, with modern climbing structures and water features for kids. The park also has a dog park and picnic areas. Round Hill Country Club is a par-72 golf course that also has bocce, swimming and a fitness center.

Upscale homes in the San Ramon Valley
Alamo is an affluent, primarily residential area with winding roads that twist and turn along low, tree-studded hillsides. Homes span various styles and eras, from midcentury ranch-styles to luxurious, contemporary estates. Mediterranean homes and new traditional houses are also common. The community has a minimum lot size of a half-acre, so yards are quite spacious. Planned and gated communities are also found here, especially in the rural landscape in the foothills of Mount Diablo. Alamo is one of the most expensive communities in the East Bay, with a median price of $2,550,000, down 2% over the past year. Homes typically sell in 32 days, quicker than the national average of 45 days.
