A rural suburbia
What once began as a rural farming community has become a thriving township with excellent schools, budget-friendly homes, and nearby shopping and dining. "I believe what draws people here is easy access to highways, an established corridor of commerce and the preservation of open green spaces," says Jim Bobeck, Muhlenberg Township manager.
Mix of architecture, spacious yards
Outer Muhlenberg offers a variety of architectural styles depending on the age and location of the home. In some sections that are located in the Temple area, architectural styles include farmhouses, bungalows and ranch-style. Most do not have garages, and yards are at least an acre in size. Roads are rural and narrow and don't have sidewalks. Homes near Reading, particularly in the River Crest section, feature new builds in a suburban setting. Here, yards are smaller, ranging in size from 1/4 to 1/3 acre. Streets are wide and lined with sidewalks, and all have garages. Housing prices range from $155,000 to $542,000.

Jim Dietrich Park is the hot spot for outdoor festivals in Outer Muhlenburg Towns.
Rock climbing, parks and dogs
Residents can drive from 5 miles via back roads to Dominic Manzella Park for some fun and recreation. The 70-acre park has a playground, a pavilion, and areas for horseshoes, volleyball and quoits. In early summer, the park hosts an event called Sundaes in the Park, where locals can enjoy music, food and ice cream. Also in the community is Jim Dietrich Park, which has sprawling grounds, a basketball court, old barns and an adjacent dog park. The park, located beside the Schuylkill River, was named after 19-year-old Jim Dietrich, a farmer who died more than 40 years ago. His mother's dream was to dedicate their 89-acre farmland to Muhlenberg Township in his name. For those who love to climb, Reading Rocks is less than a mile's drive from parts of the community. The facility includes climbs of all skills and levels, including Nicros "Custom Rock," which is as close as someone can get to real rock climbing.
Its own township
Muhlenberg was originally part of Alsace Township; however, residents in the western part of Alsace were unhappy with high taxes and the costs of maintaining roads in their part of the township. Muhlenberg Township was formed in 1851 and named after Henry Augustus Muhlenberg, a member of one of the more prominent and influential families of Berks County.
Big box meets mom and pop
Several big box stores are a 4-mile drive via back roads, including Walmart and Target. Also nearby is Boscov's Fairgrounds Farmer’s Market, which sells fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and flowers. The market includes Country BBQ, Dutch Maid Bakery and San's Asian Food among its merchants. For 20 years, Legends Bar & Restaurant has been a staple in Muhlenberg Township. In addition to their unique cocktails, the restaurant serves appetizers and pizza. Another local favorite is Craft 2700, located in the historic Freymoyer's Hotel. My experiences living in Muhlenberg are very good. It is a diverse community and everyone tends to get along very well and help others in need. There is also many parks and a favorite is Jim Dietrich because there are several festivals hosted there throughout the year.
