Ann Arbor Hills
A mix of impressive homes
Well-maintained Cape Cods, stately colonials, and eye-catching midcentury modern houses peek out from greenery along roadways and around bends, many with large additions and garages added on throughout the years. The yards and gardens in Ann Arbor Hills are extraordinary — secluded brick patios look out onto deep lawns and tree lines. Many homes feature working fireplaces and sunporches, ways of bringing old-world comfort into everyday living. “The neighborhood has its share of classic homes,” Taylor says. “It’s an eclectic group, though, from impressively large ranch-style homes to even larger colonials to brand new construction from homes being torn down and new ones built.” For even the smallest home measuring 2,500 square feet, buyers can expect to pay $700,000. Buyers can expect to pay up to $1.6 million for renovated properties with the most square footage.A-rated schools
Quality education starts early in Ann Arbor Hills, where the youngest students attend Burns Park Elementary, rated one of the top 10 public elementary schools in the county by Niche. At Tappan Middle, the No. 2 best county middle, students can participate in more than a dozen clubs exploring topics such as robotics, games, art, newspaper reporting and sexual identity. Huron High School, No. 5 in the county, participates in the International Baccalaureate program. Students can participate in both the Middle Years Programme as ninth and tenth graders and the Diploma Programme during their junior and senior years.Getting back to nature
At Gallup Park, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes from a livery in the park and return them at the Argo Park livery, 2 miles downstream. The Nichols Arboretum, known locally as the Arb, is about a mile away or a 30-minute walk. “It’s the quintessential park,” Taylor says. “The peony garden is especially beautiful in full bloom.” The 18-hole Huron Hills Golf Course, too, weaves its way through the middle of the neighborhood and offers programs to get young players engaged in the game. From espresso to fine dining
The nearby Bearclaw Coffee Co. offers espresso drinks, smoothies and sweet treats at a charming drive-through. It’s on Washtenaw Avenue, east of Whole Foods, a Walgreens and several shopping centers. To the west is the University of Michigan campus, where residents can visit the school’s museums and participate in other cultural events. For dinner, Taste Kitchen downtown offers a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines, and Gandy Dancer, a fine dining establishment, is housed in a restored 19th-century train depot.By bus, train, car or plane
TheRide bus provides service to the neighborhood, and Amtrak stops at the station on Depot Drive. Drivers can get to Toledo on Route 23 (a 50-mile trip) and to Detroit on Interstate 94 (a 40-mile trip). The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is 25 miles away on I-94.A2SF and Art Fair
In May and June, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival (or A2SF) features over 200 concerts, art exhibitions, kids activities and film screenings throughout town. In July, the city’s Art Fair spans 30 blocks downtown and features nearly 1,000 artists.Important neighborhood resources
Fellowship Bible Church is a nondenominational house of worship within the neighborhood, and several other churches line the periphery, including Ann Arbor Assembly of God, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Korean Presbyterian Church. The neighborhood also received a crime score of 2 from the CAP Index, making it one of the safest areas in the country to live.
