Apollo is a small waterside borough on the eastern banks of the Kiskiminetas River with deep roots in Armstrong County’s coal mining industry. With vintage homes dotting steep, sidewalk-lined streets, Apollo homeowners live a quiet lifestyle 30 miles east of bustling downtown Pittsburgh. The rural area's historic charm and peaceful seclusion is drumming up buyer interest, evidenced by recent retail growth. “We’ve seen a lot of new businesses open here lately,” says Anniea Stauffer, Realtor at Miscovich Real Estate. “It’s definitely an up-and-coming neighborhood.” Local event attendance is also growing as this cozy community quickly evolves.
Apollo was settled in 1790 and incorporated into a borough in 1848.

Investors and long-time owned homes
Properties typically fall below the county's average price point, which lands around $150,000. Original Apollo homes date to the mid-19th century and list for less than $100,000. Farmhouse styles dominate the architectural landscape, with shuttered windows, covered porches and two-story layouts. Most are three to four-bedroom homes with cozy configurations. Newer builds skirt the edges of town, where midcentury styles mix with traditional early 2000s-era residences with attached garages and wide-open floor plans. These spots don't change hands often, but when they do, they can climb as high as $600,000 for a 5,000-square-foot estate with land. “There are a lot of investors interested in the area, mixing with die-hards that have lived there their whole lives,” Stauffer says. Accessible price points and charming homes put this peaceful place in demand, and most listings find a new owner within six weeks on the market.
The hilly geography of Apollo consists of many different architectural styles.
Newer homes are constructed along the outskirts of Apollo.
Most Apollo homes do not have space for front yards and butt up against the street.

Multiple highways and interstate
Many Apollo homeowners travel to Kittanning for a day at the office – a 20-mile ride north. Armstrong County Memorial Hospital is the region's top employer, followed by Rosebud Mining Company, both conveniently located in the nearby town. Downtown Pittsburgh is a 35-mile ride away, which amounts to 45 minutes in the car without major traffic delays. Apollo residents take Route 66 to PA-380 for 15 miles to Interstate 376, which funnels right into the heart of the city. Locals here are convenient to a city bus stop immediately across the river, which makes stops all the way into New Kensington.
Main street local stores and restaurants
A handful of shops and restaurants live in the timeworn brick-clad storefronts lining the main drag. Flavio's is a long-time local favorite, serving Apollo residents Italian staples for over 30 years. Reservations are required to dine, and many locals book a table once a week to enjoy the home-cooked comfort food. Patrick's Pub is a more casual spot serving burgers and hoagies a few blocks down the road. Locals also visit the pub for a beer or cocktail after work. Naser Foods is the neighborhood grocer, perched on a hill next to the railroad tracks, immediately across the river. There are more shopping and dining options in neighboring communities.
The Hoagie Shop is a local favorite for anyone in need of an Italian Sub.

Gatherings in pavilions and walks around the park
Owens Grove Park is the community's outdoor getaway, with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Play equipment dots the grassy grounds, weaving between old oak and maple trees. Residents visit to play tennis or basketball on the hardtops or to take the dog for a walk around the looped path. There are covered pavilions often used for casual gatherings. Residents also get together at the high school football field next door. “They have amazing fireworks celebrations on the Fourth of July. Hundreds of people show up,” Stauffer says.
Owen's Grove is located at the peak of Apollo and includes many recreational amenities.
Apollo residents enjoy the Roaring Run Trail that runs through the town.
