Historically Black neighborhood with a changing landscape
First founded by free African Americans in 1844, Green Valley is a historically Black community in Arlington, Virginia. Since Green Valley’s inception, support from churches and outreach groups has been at the core of the neighborhood’s resiliency and community, and this spirit continues to the present. Today, Green Valley is a racially diverse neighborhood where decades-long residents welcome new families, and modest homes from the early 20th century intermingle with modern new builds in a changing landscape.
Historic churches support the community
Several churches, including Lomax AME Zion, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Macedonia Baptist Church, and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church have facilitated outreach efforts since the neighborhood’s founding. “We want to be good neighbors, and good neighbors help each other. We don’t want people to leave. We want them to be part of the community that’s for anyone,” says Sally Diaz-Wells, the social justice and outreach minister at our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. The church has a very popular food pantry and free clothing store for anyone in the area. The church offers financial assistance for residents in the 22204 and 22206 area codes and will refer those in need to other organizations. Diaz-Wells explains that the church’s programs have become even more crucial through the pandemic to today, as the cost of living has increased dramatically. “They knew we were here and that we were a safe place,” she says.
Green Valley Civic Association hosts events
In addition to the many church outreach programs in Green Valley, the Green Valley Civic Association brings locals together through events. Each year in September, the association hosts Green Valley Day. This free event invites families out for a day of live music, food trucks, children’s games and more. The neighborhood hosts the annual Antique and Classic Car Show in the summer at Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School, where visitors vote on their favorite cars. Green Valley Civic Association also organizes neighborhood beautification days, neighborhood planning meetings, yard sales, blood drives and more.
Bungalows, townhouses and modern homes
Homes in Green Valley sit close together on sloping residential streets with parking lots, and no two houses look alike. Modest, 1,000-square-foot bungalows built between the 1930s and 50s typically cost between $600,000 and $650,000 in Green Valley, while the occasional contemporary and new traditional home built between the early 2000s and today range from $700,000 to over $1.5 million. Most townhouses settle in the $700,000 to $800,000 range, though models can cost anywhere from around $350,000 to over $1 million. Macedonia Baptist Church also partners with the county to maintain The Macedonian, a low-cost apartment building for residents. “The housing is modest and maintained really beautifully. There is still a lot of private ownership by African Americans that have been here for decades. But when houses go for sale, companies buy them and build million-dollar homes that are a lot bigger,” Diaz-Wells says.
Arlington County Public Schools serve students
Students in Green Valley may begin at Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School, which earned a B grade from Niche, and continue to Gunston Middle School, which earned an A-minus. Older students attend A-minus-rated Wakefield High School, where they can participate in special programs like Spanish dual-language immersion and senior capstone projects.
W&OD Trail, Jennie Dean Park and more outdoors
Residents can enter the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail from Four Mile Run Drive in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. The W&OD Trail spans 45 miles of paved pedestrian paths from Purcellville to Shirlington, and it is well-loved by hikers and bicyclists. Jennie Dean Park has new playgrounds with sunshades for little and big kids, baseball fields, and tennis and basketball courts. Fort Barnard Park also has a playground, dog park and a community garden. Volunteers get their hands dirty to help maintain the garden and harvest fruits and vegetables for the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Army Navy Country Club is also in the neighborhood. “At one point, we had a lot of people that worked at the county club on this side. But we are in a financially diverse area. There are people that can afford a $50,000 country club membership,” Diaz-Wells says.
Dining and entertainment in Shirlington
First Impression off Shirlington Road serves seafood and soul food classics like jumbo shrimp and pork shops with sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens. Immediately south of the neighborhood, the Village at Shirlington has restaurants, bars, a movie theater and a Harris Teeter. Palette 22 in Shirlington has global fusion dishes, including cheeseburger slides, hoisin glazed pork belly bao buns and Turkish sausage in a spacious gallery. Diners enjoy their meals, listen to live music and watch local artisans practice and sell their crafts.
Traffic and commuting around DC and NOVA
People commute all over from Arlington, including to Washington, DC and around Northern Virginia and Maryland. Green Valley is within 5 miles of major landmarks such as the White House, Arlington National Cemetery and The Pentagon. Although the neighborhood does not have a Metro Station, locals can drive and park at nearby stations such as Ballston-MU and Rosslyn to expedite crossing over the Potomac River into DC. Interstate 395 borders Green Valley on the east, but traffic can be very heavy. “Between 8 AM and 10 AM, traffic is horrendous. It can get gridlocked, and you can get stuck on 14th Street Bridge for an hour,” Diaz-Wells says.
