A Washington suburb frequented by Teddy Roosevelt
In the century before developers built hundreds of homes in Williamsburg, soldiers and even a president were drawn to its high elevation. Minor Hill on the north side of the neighborhood is the highest point in Arlington, and Union soldiers captured it from Confederate troops during the Civil War to use as a signal station. Nearly 50 years later, President Theodore Roosevelt would occasionally travel from Washington, 10 miles away, to relax under the oaks on Minor Hill. It wasn’t until the 1950s that anyone made the area around Minor Hill a permanent home; a subdivision was constructed to meet the growing need for homes after World War II. Today Williamsburg is a well-kept suburban neighborhood with spacious homes and a highly rated elementary school. Its sidewalk-lined streets are suitable for walking, though walkability in Williamsburg doesn’t mean the same thing as in some other Arlington neighborhoods. Residents can walk to “parks, schools and trails rather than coffee shops, retail and sources of public transportation,” says Candee Currie, an Arlington-based associate broker with Close Partners Real Estate at Century 21 New Millennium.
Spacious homes and yards in Williamsburg
Most of Williamsburg’s wide streets have a uniform appearance, lined with Colonial Revivals and ranch homes. Occasionally the pattern is broken up by new Tudor Revival homes built on infill lots. The neighborhood offers generous square footage and yard size compared to the rest of Arlington, with houses averaging 2,800 square feet and the typical lot size at nearly a quarter-acre. Home prices start around $900,000 for homes with less than 2,000 square feet, but most houses cost between $1 million and $2 million. A few large new builds spanning more than 6,000 square feet are priced above $3 million. Williamsburg’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Takeout spots at Williamsburg Shopping Center
Residents don’t have to go far for most needs, but walking to businesses usually isn’t an option, says Shirah Cohen, a Realtor with RLAH @Properties who lives in Arlington. “Instead of being down the street, things are a mile or two away.” There are a few shops and restaurants in the neighborhood’s Williamsburg Shopping Center. 7-Eleven sells conveniences, while Deli Italiano and Peking Pavilion provide takeout options. There’s a CVS across the street, and residents can drive less than a mile to access more options on Langston Boulevard. Those include Chill Zone Cafe and Harris Teeter supermarket. It’s also less than 2 miles to VHC Health, a hospital with primary care doctors and an emergency department. Little Falls Presbyterian Church is the nearest house of worship.
Westover Farmers Market every Sunday
The Westover Farmers Market sets up every Sunday morning about a mile south of Williamsburg. The three dozen vendors include local coffee growers, Maryland mushroom farmers and fruit growers from Pennsylvania.
Nottingham Elementary gets an A
The Arlington Public Schools district ranks the second-best in Virginia according to Niche, and two schools kids in Williamsburg can attend — Nottingham Elementary School and Williamsburg Middle School — get grades of A from Niche. Nottingham Elementary, located in the neighborhood, is working to earn a Purple Star designation from the state. Purple Star schools are considered best equipped to teach students who are in military families. Teens can go to Yorktown High School, which receives an A-plus. Just outside Williamsburg, Rivendell School offers a private, Christian education for kindergarteners through eighth graders.
Limited park access
Green space is limited to two small parks. Minor Hill Park consists of a pair of picnic tables on a patch of grass next to a county water storage facility. The other option, Sharp Park, is a wooded acre planted with 600 azaleas. Parkgoers can sit on benches or wander a path through the trees. For a more robust park experience, residents can go less than a mile south of Williamsburg to Tuckahoe Park, home to a large playground, tennis courts and trails that loop through its 12 acres.
Driving Langston Boulevard, I-66 to Washington
People in Williamsburg typically need cars to get around. Langston Boulevard runs along the south side, which drivers can take across northern Arlington. It’s also the most direct route to Washington for those who want to avoid tolls. Motorists can also pay to use Interstate 66, an expressway. Residents can commute via rail from the East Falls Church Metro station about a mile outside the neighborhood. Riders can park at the station and ride the Silver Line to Washington in about half an hour.
