Boardwalk, beach and live music highlight this coastal north New Jersey neighborhood

In Asbury Park, a thriving music and art scene is just as much a part of its charm as the beach and boardwalk. Murals adorn walls and businesses across town, especially along the boardwalk, and live music performances are the norm. Even the local bowling alley has a stage where bands often play. The combination of live music, arts, the beach and the boardwalk has made Asbury Park the perfect place for some. “Young professionals and empty nesters enjoy Asbury Park,” Joseph York, the Branch Vice President at Wichert Realtors and a past resident of 10 years says. “There’s so much to do. The neighborhood has low inventory and strong demand.”

From pizza at Porta to sushi at Taka

Alongside a wide selection of grocery stores and pharmacies, Asbury Park has many popular local restaurants and bars. Residents can grab a slice of pizza or other Italian dishes at Porta or stop by Wonder Bar for a drink. Located near the boardwalk, locals love this bar for its frequent live music and designated playtimes for dogs in its fenced outdoor patio. “My personal favorite to eat is MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos,” York says. “Their Korean fried chicken wings are the best.” Locals also enjoy the seemingly endless menu of sushi at Taka. For grocery shopping and everyday essentials, residents head down to City Supermarket.

Live music galore

The thriving music scene in Asbury Park is likely to find residents in one of the restaurants or bars they choose to visit. Still, it’s also easy to seek out more at one of the many venues dedicated to live performances, including The Stone Pony. This famous local spot has been a stage for big names like Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. Just off the boardwalk, the ornate 1920s Paramount Theatre still hosts live music, stand-up comedy and other performances.

From stick-style homes to condominiums with views of the ocean

Homebuyers will find a few lingering examples of grand, ornate 1920s architecture along the boardwalk. Homes in Asbury Park are often bungalows, foursquare and stick-style homes with front porches. Single-family homes start at $240,000 for a home needing a complete gut and go for as much as $2.1 million for a 5-bedroom home with an in-ground pool in the backyard. There’s also a wide selection of townhomes and low-rise condominiums. These properties start at $160,000 for a fixer-upper, one-bathroom condo to $2.4 million for a 3-bedroom condo with nearly 2,000 square feet and views of the ocean. Getting around Asbury is no challenging task. “The neighborhood has good walkability,” York says. “It’s the type of community where you park your car there on Friday and don’t use it again until you need to go to work on Monday.” To further York’s point, Asbury Park’s Walker Score is 97 out of 100. Crime is a bit higher in Asbury Park than the national average as the CAP Index gave it a Crime Score of 7 out of 10.

Sink into the Sand at Asbury Park Beach

When residents aren’t spending time at one of the famous restaurants or enjoying live music at one of the music venues, they are usually planted in the sand at Asbury Park Beach. Lifeguards are on duty at the beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Beach passes are required to use the beach between those dates. Besides the beach, the neighborhood has a collection of small parks, with Kennedy Park being the most popular for its pop-up farmer’s market and swan-shaped paddleboats that residents can rent to take out on the lake. This market takes place every Saturday and Sunday from April to November and features handmade jewelry, clothing and other products from small local businesses alongside fresh produce, honey and flowers. And, of course, it wouldn’t be an Asbury event without live music. Thanks to the Asbury Park Music Foundation, other parks often feature live music events during the warm months.
