Vine City residents are minutes from downtown Atlanta
The historic Vine City neighborhood was home to the who’s-who of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, including its most well-known resident Martin Luther King Jr. The 1933 brick bungalow on Sunset Avenue was where King lived with his wife Coretta and four children when he died in 1968. Julian Bond, who helped establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, lived on the same street as King. Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first Black mayor, and Alonzo Herndon, Atlanta’s first Black millionaire, also lived in the neighborhood. “The history and the culture there make it unique,” says Andrea Farley, an associate broker with Maximum One Realtor Partners, who's been selling homes in the area for four years.
King’s home and several other important historic dwellings remain in Vine City, but the neighborhood has seen significant additions in recent years with the creation of new housing, the Rodney Cook Sr. Park, and the Atlanta Falcons Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In addition to the stadium being right next door, the neighborhood is just 2 miles from downtown, providing residents with a myriad of entertainment options.

Vine City has curb appeal
Homebuyers will find a wealth of early 1900s bungalows, as well as newer condos and single-family homes. Lots are compact and typically rest along narrow sidewalk-lined streets. “They’re doing a lot of building," Farley says. "It’s going to look very different in a few years.”
The average sales price hovers around $300,000. Two-bedroom cottages go for around $250,000, while a five-bedroom might fetch $350,000. “Prices tend to be higher outside of the neighborhood,” Farley says.
An enclave for historically Black colleges and universities, Vine City hosts Morris Brown College, a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1881. Spelman, Morehouse and Clark are also nearby. So, the area has its share of students, but they aren't the majority. “There are a lot of people who have lived there for a long time,” Farley says. “They’re over 55 and they own their homes outright.”

Rodney Cook Sr. Park offers a place to play
Vine City has a history of flooding, but the $45 million Rodney Cook Sr. Park, which opened in 2021, was designed to address that problem by redirecting stormwater into a 10-million-gallon pond. The 16-acre park on Vine Street Northwest also features a playground, sprawling lawn, splash pad and amphitheater. Just west of Vine City is Washington Park, Atlanta’s first planned Black suburb. The area's namesake park offers tennis courts and a heated, indoor competition-sized pool with 10 lanes.
Families can head to Rodney Cook Park and enjoy the splash area.

Busy Bee Café has been a local favorite since 1947
The iconic Busy Bee Café on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Northwest is a James Beard award-winning restaurant that's been serving up Southern comfort foods like fried chicken, mac and cheese and collard greens since 1947. It was a frequent meeting place for Civil Rights leaders including King, who is said to have been a fan of their ham hocks. A grocery run can be easily handled at the Walmart Supercenter along the same stretch of road.
Busy Bee is a phenomenal restaurant in Vine City with famous patrons of the Civil Rights Era.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is Vine City's neighbor
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium rests against Vine City’s eastern border, so residents are a short walk away from seeing the Atlanta Falcons play or catching internationally known music performers, such as Taylor Swift.
The Herndon Home Museum is another worthwhile attraction right in the neighborhood. The 1910 Classical Revival mansion, located across from Morris Brown College, was the home of Alfonzo Herndon who was born into slavery but went on to become Atlanta’s first Black millionaire after founding the Atlanta Life Insurance Company.
Vine City residents enjoy close proximity to landmarks, such as the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Students attend historic Booker T. Washington High
Public school students in Vine City may attend the neighborhood's Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy, which serves students in prekindergarten through 8th grade, and Booker T. Washington High. Part of the Atlanta Public Schools system, the academy scores a C-minus Niche grade, while the high school garners a C. Established in 1924, Washington High was Georgia's first public high school for Black students.
