Fort Gordon consumed most of a farming community called Pinetucky when it was built during World War II. Though the old settlement’s name isn't heard so often in this pocket of southern Richmond County today, a stretch of land on the opposite side of U.S. Route 1 carries its legacy and preserved pine-forested terrain to the outskirts of Blythe and Hephzibah. “It’s one of those little parts of history that not everyone knows, but I've been told that we’re sitting on the last remaining parcel of what was Pinetucky.
