A Bakersfield suburban neighborhood with history and amenities
Gosford is a suburban neighborhood on Bakersfield’s southwest side, just a few miles from the surrounding Southern California farmland. The community's residential streets are quiet, and dozens of shopping and dining options, along with some of the city’s best schools, are just a short walk away.
Bakersfield is home to agricultural and petroleum industries — both of which have high emission rates. Because of that, the area often struggles with air pollution. Additionally, the asthma rate in Kern County is 2% higher than the California average.
Gosford Road features an attractive stucco wall that discreetly separates the residential side of the road from the retail strip. The road and the community are named after British nobility, the 4th Earl of Gosford, Sir Archibald Acheson. In the late 1800s, after the Gold Rush faded, landowners in southwestern Kern County began marketing tracts of land to wealthy English investors. “One of the biggest plots was sold to the Earl of Gosford. He lived here for a few years and tried his hand at farming but was not happy with the results. He gave up the land and returned to England,” says Donato Cruz, an archive specialist at California State University Bakersfield. “Today, the only trace that the earl was here is the name he left behind.”

Tiled roofs and tidy sidewalks
As is true in many Bakersfield neighborhoods, Mediterranean-style architecture is common among Gosford’s streets, with homes featuring arched entryways and red tile roofs. There are also a mix of ranch-style and mid-century modern homes sprinkled throughout the area. “Buyers can get more bang for their buck here,” says Alex Daredia, a local real estate agent with CENTURY 21 Jordan-Link & Company. “You see more square footage for less than surrounding neighborhoods and the property taxes are a bit lower than the city’s average.” On the market’s lower end, fixer-uppers go for $315,000, while ranch-style homes with modern renovations and in-ground pools can be listed between $390,000 and $450,000. “The community is a great hybrid of an already developed suburb and one that is continuing to grow,” Daredia says. “Many of the homes were built before 2000, but there are lots of new businesses and industrial growth coming to the area as well.”
School days in Gosford
Young students of Gosford can attend Sing Lum Elementary School and Tevis Junior High School, both of which earn B overall grades from Niche and are within walking distance of the neighborhood’s homes. Stockdale High School gets an A rating and is listed as the best public high school in the Bakersfield area, according to Niche. Stockdale High offers a varied selection of career and technical education courses, including media arts, engineering design and principles of biomedical science. “The highly rated Gosford school systems keep the housing selling,” says Daredia. “Homes don’t tend to linger on the market.”
Outdoor recreation offerings
Campus Park North and Campus Park South both feature playgrounds, while South is also home to pickleball and tennis courts, picnic tables and a small pond, where ducks and geese drift on the surface. The Seven Oaks Country Club is 2 miles from Gosford and is home to a 27-hole championship golf course, tennis courts and two swimming pools.

A whirl of retail and restaurants
Gosford Road and White Lane are lined with dozens of restaurants and shops, including Walmart, Sam’s Club and Asia Market. Locals can get their daily dose of caffeine at Bakersfield Roasting Company or indulge in classic comfort food at the family owned Salty’s Barbecue. Lengthwise Brewing Company has a handful of locations throughout town, including one just east of the neighborhood’s residential streets on District Boulevard, with dozens of rotating craft beers on tap.

Gosford is 8 miles southwest of Bakersfield’s city center, which can be accessed by taking Gosford Road to Truxton Avenue. "We are a car-reliant city," Daredia says.
