A growing northwest Bakersfield neighborhood
Nottingham Estates is a residential area in northwest Bakersfield within walking distance of churches and public schools. “The neighborhood is great for families because it has walkable access to schools and parks,” says William Gordon, a Realtor with Watson Realty who has over two decades of experience in Bakersfield. People move to Nottingham Estates for proximity to green spaces like Polo Park and for the quiet suburban lifestyle it offers. Bakersfield saw an increase in population after COVID-19 thanks to a rise in remote work, says Gary Carruesco, a broker with Brimhall Realty who has nine years of experience in the industry. “Bakersfield home prices are much more affordable compared to the Bay Area, which is one of the biggest reasons for the population growth in the past few years,” Carruesco says.
Spanish Revival homes starting at $400,000
Most homes in Nottingham Estates and surrounding communities were built in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Single-family homes, including Spanish Revivals, are priced between $400,000 and $600,000, depending on the size and upkeep of the house. Some of the more expensive homes are two-story properties with in-ground pools. Homes sit close together, with an equal amount of space dedicated to lawns and driveways. Properties and sidewalks are shaded by tall palm trees and streetlights.

The public can access the Links at Riverlakes Ranch Golf Course, an 18-hole facility that’s 4 miles away.

Air pollution in Bakersfield
Because Bakersfield is positioned in a valley near the mountains, pollution tends to get trapped in the air. Dust also accumulates because of the city’s large agriculture industry. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has programs like Park and Ride, which encourage developers to build commuter lots and decrease vehicle usage.
