Brentwood is a peaceful Maryland community on the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, defined by its thriving creative scene and active local government. Order burgers, tacos and drinks at miXt Food Hall
“There’s miXt Food Hall, which isn’t just a food and culture hall that features different restaurateurs, but also a community gathers place with art pop-ups and clothing spots,” says Aja Hawkins, a Realtor at the Kimberly Diggs Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate who has served the area since 2009. At the food hall, residents can order from a range of local restaurants before sitting to eat in the art-filled, trendy communal seating area. If they’re craving burgers or wings, locals can head to The Burger Shop or choose Mush for vegan versions of popular sandwiches. La Michoacana serves up Mexican fare, and residents can end their meals with Simple Pleasures ice cream or a cocktail from the miXt Drink bar. There aren’t grocery stores in the neighborhood, but Glut Food Co-Op and Lidl are both under a mile away. While residents can shop for hand-made jewelry and ceramics at the Brentwood Arts Exchange artisan shop, they must travel 2 miles north to the Mall at Prince George’s for traditional retail shopping.

Art, music and community flourish in Brentwood
The neighborhood’s crown jewel is the Brentwood Arts Exchange, a cornerstone of the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District that features a public gallery and workspace where residents can enjoy visual art exhibits. Along with the free gallery, locals can buy tickets to experimental musical performances and family-friendly workshops. As they walk down Rhode Island Avenue, locals can stop in a couple of independent galleries. The miXt Food Hall acts as a venue for community events, like comedy nights, workshops and artists receptions, and the town of Brentwood organizes neighborhood events. “They have a lot of community involvement in Brentwood. At Bartlett Park, there’s an Easter Egg hunt, an Annual International Day celebration and a summer concert series,” Hawkins says. In June, the town comes together to celebrate Brentwood Day with live musical performances, pony rides, games and food trucks.

Renovated Cape Cods and bungalows
Along with a couple of industrial spaces and local businesses, Rhode Island Avenue has a few trendy apartment complexes that serve residents. However, most live in single family homes properties along peaceful residential roads. Early-to-mid-20th-century properties make up Brentwood’s housing stock, primarily appearing in Cape Cod and bungalow designs. Prices start around $300,000 and increase to about $550,000, depending on modern renovations, but there are some larger cottages and multi-family properties priced between $600,000 and $750,000.

Appreciate artwork at the Brentwood Arts Exchange
Residents of all ages can exercise at Bartlet Park, a public space next to Town Hall featuring a small playground for young kids, a larger playground for older children and exercise stations for adults. The park’s gazebo is a popular gathering spot for community activities, like the town’s summer concert series. For outdoor recreation, cyclists and joggers can head to the paved Brentwood Levee Trail on the border of the Anacostia River. Originally created by the county to mitigate flooding, the path connects to the Northwest Branch Trail, the 21-mile multiuse trail that runs through Maryland and Washington, D.C. For artistic endeavors, locals can head to the Brentwood Arts Exchange to attend free or affordably priced art classes.

Ride the bus to catch the Green Line
Commuters can’t catch the Metro in Brentwood, but they can travel about 2 miles northwest to board the Green Line at the West Hyattsville station. They can catch the Orange Line at the Riverdale station, almost 3 miles north of Brentwood. “There are bus lines that can take you into the Metro stations,” Hawkins says. Bus stops operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority can be found throughout the neighborhood. Commuters can also drive southwest down Rhode Island Avenue for 5 miles to arrive in Downtown Washington, D.C.
Pre-professional arts programs at Northwestern High
Children can start school at Mount Rainier Elementary, which has a C rating from Niche, and advance to C-minus-rated Hyattsville Middle. Older students can go to C-rated Northwestern High, where students interested in the arts can enroll in the Jim Henson Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, a four-year arts program designed to prepare students to enter artistic careers and college programs.
