A residential Bronx neighborhood keeps residents connected
As the northernmost part of the Bronx, Wakefield is literally the end of the subway line. The 2 and 5 trains stop on elevated tracks above White Plains Road as if heralding a change in culture and county. North of here, commuters must take the Metro-North Railroad, which is more upscale than the New York City subway system. The Wakefield neighborhood prides itself on maintaining its residential character, flaunting a mix of detached and semi-detached single-family homes and apartment buildings. “Wakefield is very popular with middle-class buyers,” says William Beltran, a real estate broker with Douglass Elliman and Bronx native. “When a house comes on the market, it doesn’t stay long.” Though it’s the end of the subway line, the enclave still offers residents a well-connected lifestyle with proximity to green spaces, schools and an array of diverse shops and eateries.
The sloped streets of the Wakefield neighborhood are very unique to The Bronx.
Residents can take the 2 train at Nereid Avenue in Wakefield.

Brick homes range from co-ops to detached Victorian styles
Walking along these sloped streets from Westchester County to Bronx County, it’s hard to notice much difference besides the public transportation. The same prewar colonial brick residential architecture warms under the same sun. “It’s mostly single-family, two-family and even some three-family homes,” says Beltran. “There are very few high buildings.” Still, apartments and coops make up most of the housing inventory. Co-ops in brick tenement buildings can range from the low $100,000s to the mid $200,000s. Colonial, semidetached brick homes are common, costing between $450,000 and $750,000, while single-family detached Victorian and bungalow styles may list between $655,000 and $1.2 million. Multifamily investment properties typically start in the low $800,000s and can climb to $1.6 million.
Co-op buildings are a common feature of the Wakefield neighborhood.

Recreational facilities and outdoor spaces just minutes away
Green spaces are only minutes away from Wakefield residents. A slice of Shoelace Park reaches the neighborhood's southwestern edge, providing folks with trails and a playground along the Bronx River. Paddlers can kick off from the park’s kayak launch. Trails stretch west into the Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of legendary New Yorkers like Herman Melville and Irving Berlin. Further west still is the massive Van Cortlandt Park, a 1,200-acre tract with paved trails, playgrounds, sporting fields and more. The park is also home to the historic Van Cortlandt House Museum and two golf courses. Closer to home, the Wakefield Playground is a popular recreational spot with sports courts. A few blocks over, the Bissel Gardens bloom with seasonal vegetables and plants grown by the community.
Many residents and students in The Bronx frequent Van Cortlandt Park.

Local Jamaican eats, convenient grocery options
Most of the neighborhood’s diverse restaurants and local shops and businesses line White Plains Road. The top-notch West Indian cuisine in the Bronx is known for flourishes in Wakefield at places like the local Jamaican chain Golden Krust. Jamaican pastries and baked goods are offered at neighborhood staples like Kingston Tropical Bakery, Champion Bakery and Paul’s Caribbean Bakery. White Plains Road also has many grocery store options, such as Foodtown and Met Foodmarkets, tucked between beauty salons, barbers and other services. Big-box retailers cluster at the District Shops of Pelham Manor, 2 miles east of the neighborhood, while department stores like Burlington and Macy’s are located at The Mall at Bay Plaza, 3 miles away. The plaza also houses the AMC Bay Plaza Cinema 13.

Programs for teens and adults at Wakefield Library
Situated in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood, the Wakefield Library is a grand, old neo-classical building from 1938. The library’s Teen Center has recently expanded, offering a broader scope of resources, from tech equipment to art materials. The center regularly hosts various programs, from an afternoon craft hour every Wednesday to themed Friday activities. For adults, the library is a workshop hub, including computer help and basic keyboarding skills.

For travel further north, commuters can take the Metro-North Railroad from the Wakefield train station on Wakefield Avenue. Here, the Harlem line runs south to Grand Central in Manhattan and north to the Wassaic station in Amenia. Car drivers can hop on the Bronx River Parkway, which hugs the neighborhood’s west side.

I moved here in 2019–bought a colonial revival right by the community garden at the train yard. I have great neighbors, and it is a short walk to the 2/5. We hang out in Woodlawn, a 25 minute bus ride away, and our date night place is Ripe, a terrific Jamaican place right on the Mt. Vernon border.

Diverse and filled with a variety of people and their various culture infuse in the area. Fast food and shopping centers have dominated the area which makes everything convenient. My only problem is that people need to curb their dog.
