Ferndale

Ferndale

Located in Anne Arundel County

Ferndale is a bustling town between BWI and retail centers

While Ferndale originally got its name from the valleys of ferns that populated the South Baltimore community, today the town is populated with commercial industry and residences. Bookended by Baltimore/Washington International Airport to the west and big-box shopping to the east, the area has become a working-class and highly trafficked district. “It’s definitely loud, but it’s great for people who work at the airport,” says Nancy Smith, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty with 25 years of experience in the Baltimore region. “And there’s easy and convenient access to the Beltway.” Residents can take advantage of proximity to Interstate 97, which cuts through town, or catch the light rail for a quick jaunt into the city, about 10 miles north.

Big-box shopping and local dining surround the Baltimore town

A short drive in any direction will bring Ferndale residents to an array of shops and eateries. The east side of town features multiple shopping centers populated along the bustling State Route 2. Locals can grab groceries at Giant and Aldi, essentials at Costco, Target and Walmart, and bites to eat at one of the many chain, takeout and independent restaurants. Hook & Reel is a popular spot for Cajun cuisine and seafood, and The Olive Tree offers homemade Italian classics. On Ferndale’s north side, a small shopping plaza includes Food Lion, a pharmacy and more dining options. Illusions is open late, serving upscale dinners with a side of craft cocktails and live entertainment. More centrally located in town, Willy’s Kitchen serves locally sourced American breakfasts and lunches, and Ferndale Tavern offers karaoke and pool, along with their full bar. Nearby, B&B Snowballs & Seafood provides both fresh custard and fresh crab legs, when they’re in season.

Residences include established ranch-styles and townhomes

Homebuyers interested in Ferndale can find a blend of single-family properties and townhomes. While the town is surrounded by retail and industry, about 60% of the area is residential. “It might be a bit more congested than the surrounding areas,” says Allen Stanton, a RE/MAX Executive Realtor with 20 years of experience in the Baltimore region. “But buyers still turn to Ferndale for its affordability and proximity to conveniences.” Townhome units typically cost between $215,000 and $250,000 for 1,000 square feet of space. Ranch-styles, cottages and split-levels can begin at around $270,000 for a 1,000-square-foot home and rise to about $555,000 for a 2,500-square-foot house featuring more traditional-style architecture with modern updates.

The park also offers field space for Little League practices and games, and Andover Recreation has a members-only pool and tennis courts. The Thomas A. Dixon, Jr. Aircraft Observation Area has a playground, and also offers access to the BWI Trail, as well as a front-row seat to airplane takeoffs and landings.
