Bay Ridge sits in the southwestern corner of Brooklyn, with waterfront views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. It’s one of the borough’s quietest neighborhoods, known for leafy streets and pockets of single-family homes that feel more spread out than typical city blocks. It’s a solid choice if you want a more suburban atmosphere without leaving Brooklyn, often at prices that feel more approachable. Families are drawn to Bay Ridge’s highly rated schools, but its award-winning restaurants and waterfront parks also make it appealing to a wide range of buyers.

Types of homes in Bay Ridge and what they cost

You won’t find many high-rise towers in Bay Ridge. Instead, the neighborhood is made up of detached single-family homes, semi-detached rowhouses, classic 20th-century limestones and a mix of mid-rise condo and co-op buildings. Single-family homes near the waterfront tend to be especially popular, offering privacy on leafy, residential blocks. “You can really feel like you’re living in the suburbs without actually having to live in the suburbs or pay suburban taxes,” says Melissa Leifer, a Realtor with Keller Williams New York City. Common housing options and price ranges include:

  • Semi-detached homes from the mid-$900,00s to $1.6 million
  • Detached single-family homes from $1.5 to $2.7 million
  • Co-ops from the low $200,000s to the upper $600,000s
  • Condos from the low $500,000s to the mid-$800,000s
Bay Ridge has long been known as one of Brooklyn’s more affordable neighborhoods. The median sale price is in the mid-$400,000s, which is nearly half of Brooklyn’s overall median. It’s also more affordable than nearby neighborhoods like Sunset Park, Borough Park and Fort Hamilton.

Connected, with convenient commute options

Getting around Bay Ridge is pretty easy, although transit options are more limited than in some other parts of Brooklyn. The R train is the neighborhood’s only subway line, and the ride to Midtown takes about an hour. Many commuters opt for express buses instead, especially for a more direct trip into the city. Ferry service has also become a popular option, with trips to the Financial District taking just over 20 minutes. For drivers, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Gowanus Expressway and Belt Parkway make it simple to get around Brooklyn or head out of the borough. Because Bay Ridge sits at Brooklyn’s southwestern edge, it can look a bit removed on a map, but you’re still well-connected if you don’t mind a longer subway ride.

Where to eat, go out and shop in Bay Ridge

Brooklyn has a diverse food scene, and Bay Ridge stands out as one of its top foodie neighborhoods. “There are big avenues, 3rd and 5th, that have long stretches of retail,” says Alex Gandelman, a Brooklyn native and associate broker with SERHANT. That includes Middle Eastern restaurants, old school Italian spots and plenty of hole-in-the-wall places for quick meals. It’s impossible to list every restaurant in Bay Ridge, but a few local favorites help set the tone:

  • Tanoreen, known for Palestinian and Middle Eastern flavors
  • Gino’s Restaurant, serving homestyle Italian classics since 1964
  • Skinflints Restaurant, a neighborhood staple for burgers and vibes
  • Pizza Wagon, serving Brooklyn-style pizza in retro booths
  • Bagel Boy, the go-to spot for early morning bagels and coffee
Nightlife in Bay Ridge is low-key, with a handful of dive bars and pubs. For a bigger night out, you can hop on the R train to nearby neighborhoods like Park Slope. Grocery shopping is easy, with SuperFresh and Foodtown in Bay Ridge, along with smaller specialty markets such as Kimchi Kooks Kate’s Kitchen and New Athens Market. Along 86th Street, you’ll find big names like Sephora and Gap, and the former Century 21 department store is being redeveloped into a new retail hub called Century Marketplace.

Public and private schools for families

Highly rated public and private schools are a big reason why many families choose to live in Bay Ridge. The neighborhood is part of District 20, and public schools include P.S. 102 Bayview, J.H.S. 259 William McKinley and Fort Hamilton High School. For private schools, there’s Bay Ridge Prep, Bay Ridge Catholic Academy and Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn.

Walk to waterfront parks and green spaces

Bay Ridge has plenty of parks and green spaces, especially along the waterfront. “Shore Road Park is a really nice stretch that is literally on the ridge, with baseball fields and soccer fields right on the Narrows,” Gandelman says. “The Verrazano Bridge looms large like the Golden Gate over San Francisco.” One of the best places to take it all in is on Shore Parkway, where you’ll see people walking dogs, pushing strollers and biking along the bay. Owl’s Head Park is another go-to, with a playground, skate park and dog run. Nearby, the American Veterans Memorial Pier is a popular fishing spot.
