Brooklyn’s template of hipsturbia
With a long-time reputation for being Brooklyn’s hippest neighborhood, Williamsburg is still sought out by residents and visitors for its cultural cache and vibrant nightlife scene. Over the past few decades Williamsburg has experienced transformations, and what had historically been an area home to Jewish, Polish, Puerto Rican and Ukrainian immigrants became a bohemian enclave for artists and musicians, a hipster hotspot and then a haven for trendy restaurants and high-end boutique shopping. As the area has gentrified, its aesthetic has become glossier, though its appeal remains in its proximity to Manhattan and its overall artsy neighborhood feel. “It’s one stop outside Manhattan, so convenience is super easy; people feel like they are straddling the East Village,” says Christian Haag, a real estate salesperson with Nest Seekers International who has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. “The parks are great, the restaurant scene is awesome, the nightlife scene is great and you still have mom-and-pop boutiques.”

Condo and conversion buildings, including Austin Nichols House
Newer condo buildings and conversions have become most prevalent as Williamsburg’s popularity has grown, though there is more inventory in rental buildings. “The newer architecture popping up in the area is pretty sleek and modern, with a lot of windows and a ton of light,” Haag says. A one-bedroom condo runs between $680,000 and $1.4 million. In a waterfront conversion like the Austin Nichols House, formerly a Wild Turkey Bourbon distillery, a one-bedroom can cost between $1 and $1.6 million. The condos at One Domino Square, near the restored Domino Sugar Factory, are currently under construction. Though the neighborhood has few co-op buildings, a rare one or two-bedroom near Bedford Avenue might cost between $500,000 and $850,000. Multi-family brick townhouses go for between $1.6 million and $5.5 million.

Numerous trendy restaurants, eclectic shops and nightlife spots
Williamsburg is home to a proliferation of fashionable bars and restaurants. Neighborhood stalwarts like the Peter Luger Steakhouse and Diner, which has been serving farm-to-table specialties inside a rail car for over two decades, sits near the Williamsburg Bridge. A few blocks away on South 2nd Street, L’Industrie Pizzeria serves coveted slices. Dining and drinking spots crowd Metropolitan Avenue, including the vegetarian-focused Butcher’s Daughter, while Fresh Kills Bar mixes craft cocktails nearby at Grand and Bedford. Residents can also opt for culturally diverse fare like Brazilian, Israeli, Italian and Sichuan. Trader Joe's on Kent Avenue and Whole Foods on Bedford Avenue offer groceries.Indie shops, eclectic thrift shops, record stores and art galleries uphold Williamsburg’s creative visage. Bookstores like Quimby’s and Spoonbill & Sugartown offer trendy alternatives to chain shops, while vintage boutiques like Le Grand Strip and Awoke Vintage contrast with glitzier chains.

Home to the expansive McCarren Park
McCarren Park is one of Williamsburg’s most popular green spaces. The 35-acre tract features athletic fields, bocce and tennis courts, outdoor exercise equipment and a running track. Kids take to the two playgrounds, and in the summer months, swimmers take to the revitalized McCarren Pool, which was re-opened in 2022. Domino Park spans five acres along the East River, offering views of Manhattan and spots for picnicking. The Marsha P. Johnson State Park (formerly East River State Park) also offers passive riverside recreation with picnic spots overlooking skyline views. Just north, Bushwick Inlet Park offers soccer fields and open green spaces. Smaller parks like Sternberg Park and Cooper Park have basketball courts and playgrounds.

Annual events celebrate a diverse, artsy community
In July, crowds gather near the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the annual Dancing of the Giglio, where dancing men carry an 80-foot-tall tower and a platform featuring a brass band through the streets. An accompanying feast celebrates Italian heritage, with a street festival spanning 12 days. Other parades happen throughout the year, including the Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade in June and the Three Kings Day Parade in January.
Multiple trains, including the L, plus ferries to Manhattan
While the Williamsburg Bridge is the main connection to Manhattan for drivers, the L Train, which runs along Metropolitan Avenue, is the main line for commuters. The G train offers multiple Brooklyn stops, and the M and J trains have stops along Broadway. Buses also serve the area. Residents have access to two East River ferry stops: one in North Williamsburg near North 5th Street, and the other in South Williamsburg near South 10th Street, connecting to Manhattan and DUMBO.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

what can i say i grew up here, change is already happening and im loving it! but we can work better to bring better public schools! we need to stop focusing on so many over priced private schools, and give people who can afford to bring there child to a 20+ thousand a years school and give our public school system a chance! Safety is a advantage to me we still have some locals that are a little loco but i think that's everywhere Affordable? So let me put it this way, you pay for what you get! Wiliamsburg is Super diverse & very family friendly

I was born and raised here, I like that mostly everyone is friendly and there's not much crime here. It's always going to be a place I call home. As for change, I'd suggest less construction, everyday there's construction.

Williamsburg is a fantastic neighborhood. It's got everything you could possibly want in one place, and you don't even have to go into the city. From beautiful parks and buildings to great food, a million small businesses to support and lots of diversity, you can't go wrong with Williamsburg. It's a chill neighborhood - can't complain, personally. I suppose the only unattractive thing about it is how expensive some living costs are.
