Midcoast Maine town with a quintessential downtown area
With picturesque natural surroundings and a laid-back atmosphere, the town of Brunswick invites residents to enjoy a more slow-paced lifestyle in Midcoast Maine. Although this town is home to a steady local population, the area is also known for its notable collegiate presence: “Bowdoin College is a huge draw,” says Nancy Carleton, a local broker with Vitalius Real Estate Group. “Also, as the Portland market has gotten so pricey, Brunswick is a desirable location as far as commuting to Portland for work or play. It’s a good-sized town with lots to offer due to the college.” Carleton also adds that the K-12 Brunswick Public Schools system is highly regarded as well, receiving an overall A-minus rating from Niche. Brunswick’s history dates back to the early 17th century, and residents can find several designated National Historic Landmarks around town, including Harriet Beecher Stowe’s house. The neighboring town of Topsham sits opposite Brunswick across the Androscoggin River; the two are connected via the Frank J. Wood Bridge and the Brunswick-Topsham Bypass.

Shop and dine along Maine Street
Brunswick has been designated as an official Main Street Community and is home to a quintessential downtown area full of boutique shops and restaurants. “Downtown shops are varied and fun,” Carleton says. “Merrymeeting Plaza and Cook’s Corner are seeing a lot of new storefronts.” Lining Maine Street is a range of quirky and classic eateries, such as The Great Impasta, an Italian restaurant, The Gelato Fiasco ice cream shop, and the Portland Pie Company, a popular pizzeria. Shopping includes everything from the Bull Moose record store and Estilo consignment shop to Morning Glory Natural Foods, a health food store. In the middle of the downtown area is the Brunswick Town Mall, a sprawling outdoor green space that hosts the twice-weekly Brunswick Farmer’s Market during the warmer months. “The big shopping centers are in Topsham – tons of big box stores minutes away,” Carleton says.

Brunswick home to Bowdoin College campus
The Brunswick School Department oversees four different schools: young learners in kindergarten through second grade can kickstart their education at Kate Furbish Elementary School, which feeds into the B-rated Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School serving grades three through five. Brunswick Junior High School is an A-minus-rated institution that sixth, seventh and eighth graders can attend before eventually heading to Brunswick High School, which is also rated A-minus and was ranked No. 8 on Niche’s “Best Public High Schools in Maine” 2024 list. Those interested in seeking higher education are in luck, as Bowdoin College sits at the heart of Brunswick; not only does the college offer a range of undergraduate programs, but it also helps promote health services in the community: “Because of the college, the MicCoast Hospital is located in Brunswick. It’s a large campus with many other medical services around it,” Carleton says.

Go hiking in the Bowdoin Pines
The Town of Brunswick Parks & Facilities department oversees a number of parks and natural areas, including Maine Street Station Park, Swinging Bridge Park, Kate Furbish Preserve and Sawyer Park. Locals here are only a quick walk away from outdoor recreation and activities, as the town has been built to seamlessly incorporate natural areas into its landscape. “There is a great bike/pedestrian path along the Androscoggin River that connects over to Topsham,” Carleton says. “There are a few miles of waterfront on the south side of town with public access areas.” For some leisurely hiking trails, residents can check out the Bowdoin Pines hiking area located adjacent to Bowdoin College. And being only approximately 5 miles from Marquoit Bay, locals are always able to experience the nearby ocean breeze.

Old Navy base being converted into a housing area
A majority of the housing in Brunswick consists of single-family homes. “In the old part of town – in and around the college – there are many Federal, Greek Revival and historic homes,” Carleton says. “The rest of town has a wide variety of housing – ranches, colonials, contemporary homes and a few large condo developments.” Single-family homes here typically sell between approximately $350,000 and $700,000, although waterfront properties along the Androscoggin River tend to cost higher, sometimes breaching the million-dollar mark. Condo prices here also range widely: they typically start around $280,000, but some can sell for as much as $800,000, depending on location. Additionally, recent redevelopment projects have created new housing opportunities in Brunswick: “The old Navy base has been redeveloped into housing,” Carleton says, also adding that the area has been opening up bakeries, breweries and its own business and tech industrial park.

Check out the Bowdoin International Music Festival
One of the biggest annual events in Brunswick is the Bowdoin International Music Festival, which has been taking place every summer for more than 50 years. Festivalgoers come from all over the world to experience one-of-a-kind music performances and concerts; the Brunswick community comes together to support the event, which typically takes place over the course of a week. Bowdoin College is also home to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a wide range of unique artwork exhibits.
Catch the train at Brunswick Maine Street Station
At the center of town is the Brunswick train station, which acts as Amtrak’s final stop along the Downeaster line; residents can use this line to access major transit centers, including the Portland Transportation Center and Boston’s North Station. Throughout town, locals can find stops along the Brunswick bus line, which is operated by Western Maine Transportation Services. Interstate 295 runs just north of town and travels north toward Augusta and south toward Portland.
Brunswick Station is serviced by the Northeast Corridor Line.
