An accessibly-priced prewar condo in Flushing

Situated on a residential side street, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Flushing’s main drag, 36-20 168th Street is a well-maintained condominium built in 1937. The red-brick-clad building is home to 78 residences organized around the building’s central courtyard, featuring large layouts and ample sunshine. The handsome six-story edifice is located in Queens’ Murray Hill (not to be confused with Murray Hill in Manhattan), a neighborhood that feels more serenely suburban than nearby Flushing. Here, where the residential community is more multicultural, real estate is more competitively priced than nearby Downtown Queens. 36-20 168th Street is close to transportation, shopping and dining, offering modest amenities like laundry facilities.

Spacious layouts with large bathrooms and lots of natural light

Dating back to 1937, the building has solid construction, with poured concrete underlayment, thick plaster walls and solid-core doors — all fantastic for sound absorption and energy conservation. Floorplans here are roomy, featuring formal foyers, massive living areas connected to open kitchens and bathrooms big enough for two. The residences were designed with charming prewar characteristics; these include ample closets (many of them walk-ins), many windows with abundant natural light, herringbone hardwood floors and the occasional archway (typically in the foyer leading into the living area).

The building has 78 apartments across six floors, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. Units don’t come on the market often; a new listing typically surfaces only every few years. The most recent opening, #1E, an 800-square-foot two-bedroom with a kitchen renovated within the last ten years, went on the market for $529,999 in November 2024. Similarly, #1B, a well-maintained one-bedroom also on the ground floor, sold for $385,000 in June 2021. A three-bedroom, #1D, also on floor one, went off the market in May 2023 for $510,000.

No-frills service and basic amenities

This prewar condominium has an elevator and essential services, including a live-in superintendent and part-time maintenance staff. Not unlike most prewar buildings, this one doesn’t offer the kind of luxury amenities found in new developments on 40th Road or Northern Boulevard. There are, however, essential conveniences, including the spacious lower-level laundry room with multiple folding tables and chairs. While there isn’t parking in the building, two third-party parking garages with competitive monthly rates are nearby.

A bustling Queens neighborhood bordered by numerous green spaces

Flushing is “dynamic” in many senses of the word. Along the main drag, one can find Queens’ Chinatown, lined with street food trucks, bubble tea joints, herbal shops and Asian bakeries. Many of these businesses are family-owned, extending multiple generations back; favorites include Tian Jin Dumpling House, Xinhua Bookstore and Yeh's Bakery. Further inland, Queens Botanical Garden is situated between Kissena Park (which holds an 18-hole golf course) and Flushing Meadows Corona Park (home to the Queens Museum and Queens Zoo). These lush parklands offer much-needed respite from the day-to-day Queens hustle and bustle. Meanwhile, residents can shop at nearby markets for groceries: Key Food, H Mart and Stop & Shop.

A bit of a schlep, but the LIRR saves the day

Murray Hill, Brooklyn, sandwiched between Boadway-Flushing and East Flushing, is a bit remote. The nearest subway, the 7 line at Flushing-Main Street station, is two miles west along 46th Avenue. Luckily, the LIRR is nearby at Broadway Station; door-to-turnstile, residents can get to Grand Central Station in under half an hour. Major thoroughfares — Clearview Expressway, Long Island Expressway and Whitestone Expressway — provide access via car to greater Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
