Distinctive garden in Jackson Heights Historic District
Belvedere East and West, a pair of distinctive prewar buildings at 35-15 84th St. and 35-16 85th St., sit in the heart of the busy diverse Jackson Heights neighborhood,
In an area known for its garden apartments, the center garden of the twin towers is a stand-out amenity due to its picturesque serenity in season, says Armen Meschian, licensed associate broker at CORE. New York City architects Seelig and Finkelstein designed the buildings and the landscaped courtyard that were erected between 1936 to 1937.
The stately six-story buildings are red brick with stone. It’s manicured gardens behind the wrought iron fences greeting visitors to Belvedere East and West. The entranceways feature stone columns and glass double doors. Patterned brickwork throughout highlights the design.
Magnificent garden between two buildings
There are 108 apartments in Belvedere East and West. There is an on-site laundry room, a live-in superintendent, additional storage for personal items and bicycles, a multipurpose room with kitchenette to host special events, an elevator in each of the two buildings and a virtual key for business and package drop offs. But it’s the property’s private garden that’s a sought-after amenity, says Meschian, a Jackson Heights specialist.
The garden is an urban sanctuary with trees and evergreen hedges. There are benches for residents to relax and reflect. Swan sculptures dot the walkways for aesthetic appeal.
Prewar details throughout the interior
Price of the units are based on size and condition. A large one-bedroom was listed in December 2024 at $420,000 with a garden view. The bathroom features original tiles in yellow hue with a separate stand-up shower, a yellow tub to match the decor and a built-in hamper untouched from the 1930s era. There’s even a pull-out rack original to the bathroom to dry small items of clothing.
An arched doorway leads to the spacious living room with ample light and 9-foot ceilings. Original hardwood flooring remains intact in the units.
The eat-in kitchen is flanked by cabinetry. While the cabinetry in this unit has been updated, the condition of each apartment will vary.
The windows have been replaced throughout the building in the 1990s, Meschian says, adding they are double pane windows. When seeking to purchase a unit at the Belvedere East or West, buyers sometimes opt for the garden view, he adds.
The bedroom size is large with enough space to fit a desk for a home office.
Meschian’s one-bedroom listing at $420,000 features a 20’8” x 12’6” living room, a 17’x13’ bedroom and an 18’ x 7’6” kitchen.
Colombian eats around the corner
While Jackson Heights is multicultural, this section of the neighborhood is known for Latino businesses such as La Pequena Colombian restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue and 84th Street. There’s also Las Margaritas right near the buildings, a Colombian and Tex-Mex bar and restaurant on 37th Avenue and 84th Street.
The closest supermarket to the co-op is CTown at 85-08 37th Ave. The Jackson Heights farmers market is at Travers Park on 76th Street and 34th Avenue and open on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The storefronts on 82nd Street between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue offer shopping for apparel needs or fast casual eats.
This stretch in Jackson Heights also features several beauty salons. Lashes and Permanent Makeup by Paola Patino is on Roosevelt Avenue and 86th Street. Along 37th Avenue, salons include Studio L.A., Chic Style, Manat Threading and Nila’s Eyebrow Center.
Commute to Manhattan in around 20 minutes
The closest subway line to the co-op is the 7 train on 82nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue. There are five subway lines (E, F, M, R and 7) to choose from — including two express trains one stop away at Roosevelt Avenue on 74th Street. Commuters can get into midtown Manhattan in about 20 minutes by subway and downtown in about 45 minutes. The 7 line provides the benefit of getting to CitiField for Mets Baseball in about 10 minutes. Several bus lines serve Jackson Heights, including the Q32, Q33 and Q49 as well as the Q70 Express to LaGuardia Airport, the closest airport to the buildings. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are conveniently close.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
