Prewar co-op offers value and historic charm

Brady Court is a 1932 co-op in Pelham Parkway that’s readily identified by its four six-story Tudor-style buildings. A grand brick-columned entrance topped with wrought iron and an elegant sign welcomes residents onto the landscaped grounds, where meandering sidewalks through the courtyard connect the buildings. According to a 1984 article in the New York Times, the apartments were initially called Pelham Terrace, and part of a push to lure the middle class to the Bronx in the 1920s. The rental complex fell into disrepair over the decades. However, a $3 million loan from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Community Preservation Corporation helped to restore it in the early ‘80s. Brady Court became a co-op in the late ‘80s.

Well-maintained units combine prewar architecture and updated amenities

The 374 units combine prewar elements with modern conveniences. Many kitchens have been updated with microwaves, dishwashers, stainless-steel appliances and high-end counters, like Carrara marble. Many renovated bathrooms have replaced the original colored tiles with neutral subway tiles and added modern vanities. Numerous prewar details add character, including bay windows, arched doorways, bordered parquet floors, crown moldings, large windows, foyers and high ceilings. Other common prewar aspects are big rooms, steam-heat radiators, windowed galley kitchens and shower fixtures in the middle of the tub. Units range from studios to three-bedrooms, and rentals tend to come on the market more frequently than apartments for sale. In 2024, a one-bedroom listed for $165,000, while a two-bedroom listed for $259,000. Studios offer around 500 feet with no recent sales. One-bedrooms start around 650 square feet, while two-bedrooms average around 1,000 square feet. There haven’t been any recent three-bedroom sales.

Year-round community events

A tight-knit community is a big draw of living here, from its on-site library to the annual holiday lights festooning the courtyard. Brady Court has dedicated pages on Facebook and Instagram, where it advertises its holiday markets, flea markets and other events that are held in its community center. The restored Art Deco lobby features mosaic floor tile and a white plaster ceiling with decorative patterns. Each building has its own entrance and elevator, while a central basement laundry room is equipped with commercial-sized machines. The complex has a resident super and security system, plus dogs are allowed.

Residential section near businesses, transportation and the Bronx Zoo

The quiet Pelham Parkway neighborhood has long attracted residents seeking lower prices than Manhattan. Brady Court is located in a residential, tree-laden section populated with low rises. It’s just a few blocks from Bronx Park, a 700-acre space with walking paths and ball fields. The Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden are the most iconic spots in the park. Both offer free admission to residents on Wednesdays and anytime to those who apply for a free membership with an IDNYC card. Nearby, the Moshulu-Pelham Greenway is a favorite cycling path that leads to Van Cortlandt Park and City Island. Diverse businesses cluster along Lydig Avenue, encompassing an assortment of local grocers, small independent restaurants and everyday services. More businesses line White Plains Road, a major artery filled with chains.

Convenient to 2 and 5 trains, but parking is limited

The elevated 2 and 5 trains run along White Plains Road, and it’s a short walk to the Bronx Park East stop. From there, it takes about 40 minutes to reach Midtown. Buses are a short walk as well, while drivers are near the Bronx River Parkway and Pelham Parkway. Owning a car is helpful but finding street parking is problematic. LaGuardia Airport is about 10 miles away.
