‘Diverse’ Spuyten Duyvil co-op offers convenient location and value
Some people at River Point Towers have lived in the Spuyten Duyvil co-op for nearly 60 years, since it was completed in 1966. The 25-story, white-brick building’s combination of location, community and affordability makes residents put down roots. Take Ilana Rabinowitz, a healthcare consultant who sits on the co-op’s board. She has lived in the building for more than 25 years and notes the “nice atmosphere” of the co-op. “It’s got people of all ages, and it’s diverse racially and religiously,” she says. “The people are friendly, and it also has a 24-hour doorman. It’s a nice feature, in terms of getting packages and safety.” Plus, prices are relatively affordable compared to other parts of the city. “It’s a bargain,” Rabinowitz says. As long-time residents leave, units that have not been renovated in decades provide opportunities for buyers ready for a project. The building did go through a spell of bad management, Rabinowitz notes, but a new management company has been hired, and things have improved. “There’s just a better attitude toward the people who live here. And people feel comfortable coming to the office and talking to the staff. It’s a better quality of life.”
Light-filled residences with water views
The building has 412 units ranging from studios to three-bedrooms, with one- and two-bedrooms the most prevalent. Finishes vary greatly, as some haven’t seen any updates since the ’60s, and others are entirely contemporary. Still, parquet floors, wall-length windows and galley kitchens are standard. The surrounding area has several other large residential towers, but there’s enough space that residents get ample light inside their apartments and have views of reaching as far as the Hudson River and New Jersey’s Palisades. Corner units have outdoor space, some overlooking Spuyten Duyvil Creek.
Alcove studios measuring as much as 625 square feet range from $150,000 to $170,000, while one-bedrooms cost between $190,000 and $220,000. A two-bedroom looking to be in original condition, complete with a kitchen telephone installed in the wall, asked $325,000 in late 2024, while a gut-renovated unit of the same size was listed for close to $540,000. No three-bedrooms were on the market at the end of 2024, but two sold earlier in the year for $500,000 and $525,000.
From a porte-cochere to an outdoor swimming pool
Residents can pull up to River Point Towers’ circular driveway to load or unload their cars and will be met by a full-time doorman on duty. There’s also a small gym and community room that was upgraded in the last few years. “There’s a place for kids to play; there’s a place for adults to hang out and sit comfortably,” Rabinowitz says. “You can rent it for an event.” There’s also a playground and an outdoor pool surrounded by a large sundeck.
Common charges are on par with other buildings in the neighborhood and include electricity, heat, central air-conditioning, gas and cable, pool maintenance and other building-related costs.
A leafy Bronx enclave with necessities nearby
River Point Towers is one of several large residential buildings at the almost suburban-feeling southeast corner of the Bronx, just across the Spuyten Duyvil Creek from Manhattan. Across the street from the building is a strip of necessities, with a small, recently remodeled grocery store, a dry cleaner, nail salons and a liquor store, plus a Rite Aid. Residents can drive five minutes to Kingsbridge for additional restaurants and shopping, including Tibbett Diner, the Bronx Public bar and grill and Stop & Shop.
Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park is about seven-minutes away on foot, offering hiking trails and river views. Henry Hudson Park is about a 10-minute walk, offering a dog run, baseball diamond, courts and a playground, as well as walking paths, benches and lawns. Seton Park is about 15 minutes on foot, featuring tennis courts and the more than 4-acre Raoul Wallenberg Forest, while the 1,146-acre Van Cortlandt Park, complete with a golf course and a lake, is about a 40-minute walk or 10-minute drive.
Walking distance to Metro-North, although a car is handy
“It’s also an unusually well-located building,” Rabinowitz says. “The Metro-North is a seven-minute walk away, and there are local and express buses right at the front door.” From the Spuyten Duyvil Metro-North station the trip to Grand Central is about 30 minutes. There are also express buses, the BxM1 and BxM2, that offer service to midtown in about an hour, depending on traffic.
A car is useful in Spuyten Duyvil, given its suburban feel. The building has indoor parking, but there is a “very long waitlist,” Rabinowitz notes. For those waiting, there’s street parking or River Point Towers has deals with nearby buildings to handle the overflow. The Henry Hudson Parkway is just minutes from River Point Towers, offering access to Manhattan’s West Side, Yonkers and Westchester.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
