An East Elmhurst prewar condominium with old-world elegance
Situated on Britton Avenue between Broadway and Layton Street, The Britton is a handsome six-story prewar condominium on a cozy tree-shaded intersection. Clad in yellow brick with the occasional Art Deco ornament — a geometric shape here, a highly stylized motif there — the building is, by and large, unassuming. The landing is perhaps the only section of the exterior that could be described as, to a great degree, ornate. As if signifying what's to come inside, the carved limestone entrance features two Corinthian columns, Streamline Moderne-style horizontal grooves and front doors with half-moon porthole windows. A sumptuous 1920s material palette in the lobby greets visitors, including vibrant green and red marble flooring, bright mirror-paneled walls and flamboyant floral wallpaper.
Spacious layouts with high ceilings and ample deep closets
The Britton comprises 82 residences, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. Studios average 500 square feet; a recently renovated unit fetched $569,000 in March 2023. One-bedrooms range from 800 to 950 square feet; the last sale, a condo with many original features, including parquet flooring, netted $480,000 in November 2023. Two-bedrooms are more common, maxing out at 930 square feet; the most recent transaction closed at $530,000 in November 2023. As a result of combining units, three bedrooms, spanning between 950 and 1,100 square feet, are less common; the last purchase was sold for $659,000 in December 2019.
Low common charges
Monthly fees, including heat and water, are low, relative to new condominiums nearby. For example, a one-bedroom that sold for $530,000 in January 2024 listed $430 in common charges.
A modest elevator building with basic amenities
The Britton is a standard prewar condominium with a live-in super and part-time maintenance staff. While it doesn’t have the amenities seen in new luxury high-rises, there are just the right conveniences to make life easier. On the lower level, there is a community laundry room and rentable storage. Plus, the building is pet friendly.
A bustling Queens neighborhood with many conveniences
If buyers are looking for a quiet Queens hideaway, this isn’t it. Elmhurst is a place where people are always moving. In exchange for the constant hubbub, residents can easily access public transit, shopping and restaurants. You can’t talk about this neighborhood without mentioning the two gigantic malls within walking distance from The Britton: the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill-designed Queens Place Mall and Queens Center, which have countless chain stores, medical offices and fast-food eateries. Meanwhile, the public library was recently renovated and is now triple its original size, with three floors and a full basement comprising reading areas for children, teens, and adults; gardens, green roofs and other environmental sustainability features; and a glass cube reading room overlooking Broadway. For groceries, residents can pop by the neighborhood markets, including Stop & Shop, Key Food and City Fresh.
One block from the Elmhurst Avenue subway station
Residents can exit the lobby, turn around the corner on Britton Avenue, and walk one block east along Broadway to find the Elmhurst Avenue subway station — which provides access to the M and R trains. Via car, nearby Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Long Island Expressway make trips to Manhattan 20 minutes or fewer.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
