An Art Deco-inspired building with three floors of amenity spaces
As the brainchild of New York-based architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle, the Art Deco-inspired, 83-unit residential tower known as The Kent on Manhattan’s Upper East Side embodies a sense of old-world grandeur, but with some decidedly modern twists. Within the limestone- and brick-clad building’s 30 stories, three floors are entirely dedicated to shared amenities spaces designed for experiences (think: jam sessions in a Lenny Kravitz-designed sound lounge and a camp-inspired playroom for children). In recent years, there has been a significant trend in focusing on well-curated amenity spaces in luxury buildings, and here, The Kent follows suit. Completed in 2018 by Extell Development with interiors led by Champalimaud Design, each unique space reimagines luxury using bold 1920s cues that mingle with contemporary design sensibilities. Starting in the grand lobby, outfitted with stained rosewood paneled walls, a tiered, metallic chandelier anchors the space. According to Winston Kong, a partner for Champalimaud Design who worked on The Kent, the patterns found in the lobby’s marble flooring and gold elevator doors are also Art Deco-inspired: “There are red tones in the flooring are Rouge Griotte, which is a ruby red marble with white veins,” says Kong. “There’s also red travertine and the black pinstripe around it is black granite,” he adds. The richness of the space is offset by pops of white flowers in oversized pots and organic sculptures. Just off the lobby, residents can find the ‘Drawing Room’ designed for entertaining or greeting guests in a “Black Tie event-like” atmosphere, complete with an Art Deco-inspired fireplace and gold leaf ceilings.
A sound lounge with performance spaces and a dreamy indoor pool
Outside of the more contemporary, moody Drawing Room, there’s also a 55-foot indoor heated pool that feels straight out of The Great Gatsby. However, in speaking with Kong, the inspiration for the pool is actually far from Fitzgerald’s Long Island: On a visit to the Aman Summer Palace in Beijing 15 years ago, he was struck by the tranquility of the spaces there, including the subterranean pools. “I wanted it to be a Zen-like oasis. A space to really leave the outside world behind,” says Kong. “Almost like a grotto or a cenote in Mexico.” Unlike other sun-drenched pools enclosed in glass, the walls and ceilings are outlined in bleached, streamlined teak wood, giving the space a feeling of intimacy and privacy, both airy and contained at once. Nearby, these design cues continue into the Finnish saunas and changing rooms. But perhaps the most unique quality of the building is The Sound Lounge by Kravitz Design: a curated musical space with a keyboard, drum set, microphones, dance floor and stage — everything one might need for a private performance or mini-concert. This gathering space is also unusually large, with oversized couches that can be moved around and large screens to transform it into a proper film screening room.
Playful, nature-inspired children’s spaces and an on-site dog spa
Another popular amenity in new luxury buildings is thoughtfully curated and visually stimulating children’s spaces. “Camp Kent” makes much of its playful design, led by Williams New York with an artificial campfire and a jungle-like atmosphere with organic cues drawn straight from nature. There’s a backdrop of birch trees, picnic tables and an upper loft area reminiscent of a tree house. There’s also an outdoor children’s play area, designed by West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture, and a courtyard garden for residents of all ages. In addition to the fitness room, bike storage and dog spa, there’s another common area called the Garden Salon, where residents can kick back near the fireplace, enjoy a nightcap, and play billiards with friends.
Sun-drenched units starting at $2.6 million
Two- to five-bedroom residences generally range between 1,200 to 5,000 square feet, but the building — as of spring 2024 — is now nearly sold out. In the past, two-bedrooms have gone as low as $2.6 million, and three-bedrooms typically run between $3.7 million and $5.1 million. With ceiling heights reaching nearly 15 feet, units tend to get one of NYC’s biggest commodities: ample light. And since the building is on the corner, each unit naturally gets wider views of the surrounding cityscape.
Classic, chic interiors by Champalimaud Design
Interiors, designed by Champalimaud Design — the team behind both the Waldorf Astoria and The Carlyle Hotel — feature double-paned, oversized windows, Miele appliances and premium finishes across two color palettes, onyx and ivory. Ivory includes high gloss cabinetry and Silver Oaks oak flooring, while the Onyx option comes with ebonized oak cabinetry and crystal white marble countertops. Inside the bathrooms clad in Bianco Dolomiti marble, buyers can expect to find Kohler soaking tubs, double vanities with integrated lighting and showers with marble mosaic tiles.
Close to Central Park and Museum Mile
Situated on the corner of 95th Street and Third Avenue, residents have access to the best of the Upper East Side, including the shopping on Madison and Park Avenues just a stroll away. Four avenues west, residents can jog or walk around the 1.5-mile loop at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir at Central Park or explore the Guggenheim Museum on 88th Street. Westside Market, a gourmet grocery store, is just a five-minute walk south of the building. For getting around the rest of Manhattan and beyond, there’s the Q train at 96th Street and Second Avenue, as well as the 4 and 6 trains at Lexington Avenue and 96th Street.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
