A classic riverside prewar co-op with a colorful history near Columbia University

One of the most compelling reasons to love New York City is that, for better or for worse, it feels like some events could only happen here. Case in point, the April 1933 shooting death of a pedigreed Chow named Lord von Dick at the hands of big game-hunter Count Vasco da Gama, a descendent of the prominent 15th-century Portuguese explorer. The incident took place around 10 p.m. in the lobby of the far west side building, The Matincote, located at 395 Riverside Drive. As da Gama, a resident and veteran leader of military expeditions to the Belgian Congo recalled to The New York Times, “The shot was perfectly synchronized. The leash dropped, the dog jumped, I fired.” (The Count was convicted of killing the dog and paid a $25 fine in lieu of jail time.) That is not the only story contained within the walls of the 15-story, 1925 neo-classical building with a slightly curved face along Riverside Drive. (The entrance to the co-op, framed with handsomely carved terracotta, is on 112th Street.) The Matincote is one of the final projects designed by Gaetan Ajello, the Sicilian immigrant behind more than 30 residential buildings in the city, most of which can be found on the Upper West Side bearing a dated cornerstone engraved with the architect’s name. (However, a recent visit to the building failed to find one at The Matincote.) Ajello’s architectural legacy stretches even beyond the many buildings he designed, as he gave celebrated architect Rosario Candela his first job as a draftsman. “395 Riverside is one of the iconic buildings in the area," says former Upper West Side resident Corcoran broker Kay Moon, who has done business in the building. "It’s-elegance-meets-classic-architecture,” she adds, noting its size and formidable presence at the far west corner of 112th Street. The building features one of Ajello’s signature elements: a lobby designed to recall a single-family home, with a prominent railed staircase and elevator banks — one serving the east wing, the other the west — tucked out of view. Adding to, as Moon describes it, the “highly elevated” space is a central set of four large stained-glass windows punctuated with small squares of color. In front of them, a small seating area’s coffee table regularly holds a vase of fresh flowers, courtesy of a shareholder, a former florist. “Every time I go there, different flowers are displayed,” says Moon.

Large units with prewar details, some with Hudson River views

Homes in The Matincote include one- to four-bedroom apartments. One-bedrooms up to 900 square feet list for $600,000 and higher. Two-bedroom units measuring as much as 1,200 square feet ask $1 million or more. Three- and four-bedroom homes as large as 2,200 square feet ask $2.1 million and up. Many units have been combined, and Moon estimates an original count of 117 apartments is likely about 104 today. Apartments facing west offer Hudson River views, while those facing east provide interior views but have lower asking prices. “That’s the trade-off,” says Moon. Homes feature generous layouts and prewar details, including striking herringbone wood floors, crown, baseboard and wall molding, high ceilings and entry foyers. “The apartments aren’t cookie-cutter, and they’re very large-scale,” says Moon. “They don’t make that kind of building anymore.”

24-hour door attendant, live-in super, new fitness facilities

The Matincote has a 24-hour door attendant and a live-in super. “The basement has one of the biggest super workshops I’ve ever seen in the city,” says Moon. There is a shared laundry room, although washer/dryers are permitted in units with board approval. Fitness facilities are newly renovated and include an inviting studio space for yoga. The agent also reports that the building has very strong financials. “I had a client who lived there for 20-something years and she experienced no special assessment,” she says. Despite Lord von Dick’s fate nearly a century ago, the building is pet friendly. Subletting is permitted after one year of residency.

South Morningside Heights near Columbia, two parks and Broadway

The Matincote is located at the south end of Morningside Heights, where the influence of Columbia University and other educational institutions is strongly felt. In addition to Columbia owning most of the nearby real estate, “a lot of higher education-related people are residents in the area,” says Moon. Riverside Park is steps away, with nearby features including a playground, dog run, pickleball courts and a skate park. Columbia University is two blocks north, and its Teachers College, law school and Barnard College are also in the vicinity. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is a 10-minute walk to the east, and Morningside Park can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot. Broadway, a block away, offers shopping, dining and nightlife options. “More shops pop up every day. Mom-and-pop stores are closing, and big franchises are moving in. The city is evolving in a different way,” says Moon. H Mart and West Side Market are at 110th Street. The Hungarian Pastry Shop and Tom’s Restaurant are popular restaurants in the area. Mount Sinai Morningside is on Amsterdam Avenue at 114th Street.

Local and express trains nearby, and major roadways directly west

Public transit options include the 1 train at Broadway and 110th Street, and the B and C trains at Central Park West and 110th Street are about a 15-minute walk. Buses run along 110th Street, Riverside Drive and Broadway. Riverside Drive connects to points north and south, and the Henry Hudson Parkway along Manhattan’s west side can be accessed at 96th Street. LaGuardia Airport can be reached in about 30 minutes by car.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
