Pre War Building
2 min walk to Riverside Park
A quintessential co-op in the heart of the Upper West Side
Four Hundred West End Ave., or The Wexford as it is otherwise known — is an elegant, brick building located in the heart of the Upper West Side. Designed by Margon & Holder, the 20-story edifice is a quintessential pre-war co-op with period detailing and lots of space. “A number of buildings on the west end and Riverside were built to, let's say, lure the downtown townhouse owner uptown,” says Wendy Tsang, a real estate salesperson at Compass who has done several transactions in the neighborhood and at The Wexford. “That was part of the whole push in terms of real estate development during that era. In order to get the upper classes there, apartments needed to be very spacious. They needed to match the space someone might get downtown in a house. They were specifically designed to look like that.” The gracious scale of residences at The Wexler certainly reflect this fact, with expansive layouts featuring deep foyers and gallery-style hallways that result in units echoing the flow of a house. Apartments at the Wexler have managed, for the most part, to retain their sweeping sizes (some have become even larger due to combinations), keeping them as in-demand today as they were when they first hit the market as rentals in 1931. (The building was converted to a co-op in 1982.)
The Wexler's prime corner location on 79th Street, also keeps the building coveted by buyers as it positions residents perfectly between serene Riverside Park and vibrant Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, with proximity to Manhattan landmarks like Central Park and Lincoln Square. “The location is pretty incredible,” says Tsang. “From an access perspective, you've got the Crosstown bus right there and you’re a block away from the one train at 79th Street.” And, according to preservation website Landmark West, any buyer fortunate enough to score a place here will be living in a building that baseball hero Joe DiMaggio called home from 1939-1942.
A beautiful building with Art Deco style and king-sized bedrooms
“The building itself is beautiful and very unique,” says Tsang. The first two stories of The Wexler’s Art Deco facade are marked by a cast stone with pink and yellow marbling. Brown brick is used for the remaining floors with beige trim at the penthouse levels where setbacks begin. A canopy covers the entrance on 79th Street which is marked by double doors overlain with an elaborate Art Deco metal grill. The lobby is also Deco style, but decidedly more decadent than the building’s outside. Light reflects off of swirling shades of gold-colored marble tiles on walls, which complement the mattified sheen of gold-colored coffered ceilings. Beige stone flooring is surrounded by contrasting stone borders while deco-style grills and a decorative fireplace with a marble surround serve as the backdrop for a furnished seating area.
Units aren’t as decoratively indulgent as the lobby but the amount of space in each can certainly be considered luxuriant. Typical foyers are deep enough to use as office space or as a comfortable, furnished waiting area with several closets or room for built-ins. Kitchens, even if galleyed, are still large enough for a small table and chairs; many however, have been opened up to what were originally stand-alone living or dining rooms, creating more flow within the already sprawling spaces. All primary bedrooms and most secondary bedrooms can fit king-sized beds, in addition to lounge furniture. Homeowners have all put a personal spin on upgrades so each apartment has its own style; however, classic beamed ceilings, chevron or parquet floors and arched doorways with a soft point at their center can still be found in most units.
Two-bedroom units dominate apartment types
As one would imagine, it’s not unusual for a building like The Wexler to only have one or two of its 95 units (in actuality, a little less due to combinations) up for grabs every year. “They tend to be held, to be passed along,” Tsang says of the apartments which can stay in one family for multiple generations. No surprise then, that only three units were sold in 2024 and two in 2023.
Two-bedroom units make up the majority of apartment types, with anything above more than likely being a combination, one-bedrooms rarely surfacing for sale and studios, simply a rarity. Tsang and her team closed an alcove studio in February of 2025 for $495,000, a very atypical transaction. “Apartment 2AA is a very unique little situation: It was a larger apartment that was divided into two, and one became a studio.” Two-bedroom apartments, which typically come with two or more bathrooms, tend to range in price from $1.346 million up to $2.675 million and average around 1,500 square feet. Few three-bedroom units exist but if a buyer is patient enough, they could end up with a pretty special space like 7A, a 2,350-square-footer, with three bathrooms, sold in 2021 for $2.815 million. “You know, there are buyers out there who narrow their search to specific buildings,” says Tsang. “Sometimes they're just waiting for the right thing to come up in that building.”
Full-service staff, pre-war basics plus a children’s playroom
Pre-war residential buildings are usually not amenity-heavy and The Wexler is no different. There is a full-service staff of 11, including 24-hour doorman service and a live-in super. Bike and unit storage is available, along with a laundry room in the basement (although in-unit washer-dryer setups are allowed with board approval). But, the pet-friendly Wexler also provides a very large children’s playroom, something not usually seen in pre-war buildings. There is no parking in the building but there is a private parking garage across the street.
Residents access several parks in mere minutes and commercial strips are only a block or two away
The building’s location on 79th Street means residents are in proximity to a few well-known city landmarks and parks. A 10-minute stroll eastward ends at the four-block Theodore Roosevelt Park, which includes sprawling public lawns and a dog run, plus it houses the American Museum of Natural History’s monumental campus. Bordering this park is Central Park West and several entrances to the seminal urban greenspace. One block to the west of the building is the 100-block Riverside Park. The 79th Street entrance leads to the West 79th Street Boat Basin (a public Marina undergoing repairs until 2028), the River Run playground and walking and biking paths.
There is no retail on West End Avenue but of course, residents enjoy easy access to abundant shopping and dining options like Serafina on neighboring Broadway and French-inspired brasserie, La Sirène, on Amsterdam Avenue. A Key Food and Fairway are both within a six-block radius and local bakery and gourmet deli Zabar’s flagship store is a block north on 80th. The building shares a block with New York Sports Club and NYC Pilates so residents need not go far for fitness club membership.
Major transportation options a block or less away
One advantage of living on a major thoroughfare is that residents are never too far from transportation. Just one block east is the 1 train on Broadway and one block west is an on-ramp to the Henry Hudson Parkway. Residents catch the M79 SBS crosstown bus right outside the building and for uptown and downtown bus commutes, the M5 travels along Riverside Drive while the M11 traverses Broadway. A Citi Bike docking station is only two blocks away on Amsterdam.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
