Prewar co-op in the heart of Jackson Heights

Just off the shopping district of 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights is The Windsor,?a pair of mid-rise brick buildings flanked by manicured lawns with evergreen hedges. Built in 1928, the six-story buildings are in the middle of a tree-lined block of similar brick mid-rise residences. A long concrete ramp alongside a concrete walkway serves as the entrances for each of the buildings. Faded green awnings with garden urns decorate the entryways. There are 84 units in the buildings, and each building has an elevator and laundry in the basement and additional storage. A live-in superintendent is on-site.

Value pricing for the location

Prewar aesthetics abound at this co-op. Soaring ceilings give the illusion of more space. Moldings enhance the decorative details of the units and hardwood flooring adds to the elegance. The eat-in kitchens are in a long narrow galley style to maximize space. Many of the units have been renovated with granite counters and recessed lighting. Pricing will vary based on the upgrades. The co-op has studio and one-bedroom units. A one-bedroom, one-bathroom, 700-square-foot unit was under contract at $285,000 in February 2025, and a 720-square-foot one-bedroom, one-bathroom residence was sold for $275,000 in April 2024. The units at The Windsor are well priced for Jackson Heights prewar co-ops, says Armen Meschian, a licensed real estate broker at CORE and a Jackson Heights specialist. “They’re actually good buys for the location,” he says. Sales prices at The Windsor have historically been on the lower side compared to similar sized co-ops in the neighborhood, Meschian says.

Jackson Heights Historic District

The Windsor is part of the Jackson Heights Historic District, with buildings built primarily between 1914 and 1939. Jackson Heights was the nation’s first and largest planned garden apartment community as luxury buildings attracted Manhattanites to move to the Queens suburb in the 1920s. The community between 76th Street and 88th Street and the structures from the garden apartments to the homes in Italianate, Tudor and Georgian styles were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Today, buyers are still seeking the famed garden apartments that Jackson Heights is known for, said Vlad Simkhovich, licensed real estate broker at Jackson Heights Properties and a resident for over 40 years. “The majority of professional couples are looking for prewar,” Simkhovich says. “This is the uniqueness of Jackson Heights.” The garden apartments contain green spaces within the buildings. Those are areas to get to know neighbors in a relaxed setting. The friendliness of the neighborhood is why people seek out Jackson Heights, Simkhovich says. As a resident, he enjoys being able to socialize along 34th Avenue, which is now closed to traffic, or at Travers Park, meeting up with friends and neighbors.

Shopping, dining and more

Situated in the heart of Jackson Heights, The Windsor is close to shopping, dining and public transit. Jackson Heights’ ethnic food scene is well renowned. Along Roosevelt Avenue, options include Gorkhali Nepalese Restaurant and Om Wok, a Tibetan restaurant. This section of Jackson Heights is known for Latino businesses such as La Pequena Colombian restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue and 84th Street. There’s also Las Margaritas, a Colombian and Tex-Mex bar and restaurant on 37th Avenue and 84th Street. A neighborhood favorite for generations is Jahn’s, a stalwart of a diner and ice cream parlor that has served Jackson Heights for more than six decades at 81st Street and 37th Avenue. It’s where friends and family gather for brunch or where local Little Leagues celebrate with ice cream. This is the last remaining Jahn’s that once had almost 30 locations in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Founded in 1897, it’s known for its Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae with over a dozen scoops of ice cream. For food shopping, there’s CTown at 85-08 37th Ave. The Jackson Heights farmers market is at Travers Park on 76th Street and 34th Avenue and open on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for fresh produce and artisan baked goods. The storefronts on 82nd Street between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue offer shopping for apparel needs or fast casual eats. There are chain stores such as Carter’s and Skechers. Popeye’s and Chick-fil-A have outposts on that stretch just two blocks away. A little-known fact about Jackson Heights is that it is a destination for beauty bargains. Right near the co-op on 37th Avenue and 80th Street are beauty salons including Manat Threading and Nila’s Eyebrow Center that offer $5 brow threading. Other spas and beauty salons line 37th Avenue, offering hair and facial services, including Studio L.A. and Chic Style. The neighborhood is also home to the iconic Jackson Heights Post Office, a landmarked building with beautiful Art Deco details. Celebrity factoid: actress Lucy Liu grew up in Jackson Heights on 76th Street and attended I.S. 145, the local public junior high school.

Easy commute to city and highways

The closest subway line to the complex is the elevated 7 train on 82nd Street. But there are five subway lines (E, F, M, R and 7) to choose from — including two express trains one stop away at Roosevelt Avenue. Commuters can easily get into midtown Manhattan in about 20 minutes by subway. The 7 line provides the additional benefit of getting to Citi Field for Mets Baseball in about 10 minutes. Several bus lines serve Jackson Heights, including the Q32, Q33 and Q49, located within a block from The Windsor and the Q70 Express to LaGuardia Airport. The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and Grand Central Parkway are nearby for travel in and out of Queens.
