Plympton offers space, scenery and easy access to the coast
Natural beauty and a pastoral setting attract residents to Plympton, a community in southeastern Massachusetts less than 10 miles from Plymouth. “Plympton is a rural and very beautiful small town. It’s the smallest town in Plymouth County,” says Jean Cohen, a local advisor with Engel & Völkers South Shore. “It’s where people go to have a little elbow room.” Once a strong farming community, the town still prides itself on its agricultural roots, reflected in the many working family farms and farmhouse-style homes dotting the landscape. Cohen says the town’s open space and convenient location are a draw for new homebuyers. “Plympton is a nice opportunity to live in a beautiful, wooded area but still be close to beaches, shopping and highways,” Cohen says. “It kind of gives you the best of many worlds.”

Traditional New England housing mix on spacious lots
The rural landscape of Plympton creates a spread-out community of residential pockets. “There is definitely more land in between homes because it’s not as densely populated,” Cohen says. Homes line the town’s main routes and become sparser as roads branch off. Traditional New England architecture is most common here, with styles ranging from historic Colonial-era homes to cottages and Cape Cods. Midcentury split- and bi-level homes offer variety, and farmhouses and contemporary homes on expansive properties provide generous layouts and more space. Prices typically start at around $400,000 and larger properties commonly fetch between $800,000 and over $1 million.

Above average academics in Silver Lake Public Schools
School-aged children in Plympton are zoned to attend Silver Lake Public Schools, a district with a B overall Niche rating serving close to 1,600 students in the county. Kids may begin at Dennett Elementary School, which earns a B-plus, for kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eighth graders can attend Silver Lake Regional Middle School before advancing to Silver Lake Regional High School. Both schools receive B grades. The high school’s career and technical education program offers challenging hands-on courses ranging from culinary arts and carpentry to automotive technology and horticulture.

Plympton’s natural beauty and scenic setting put residents close to several recreational opportunities, including parks, conservation areas and ponds. Popular hiking areas include Cato’s Ridge Conservation Area, Two Brooks Preserve and the Cranberry Pond Conservation Trail. These trails etch their way through forests, wetlands and historic bogs, offering scenic views and opportunities for wildlife watching. “Two Brooks and Cato’s Ridge are beautiful public spaces for walking and hiking with beautiful views,” Cohen says. In town, Holt Field is popular for baseball games, and Plympton Green offers a stretch of open space that hugs Main Street.

Halifax and Kingston offer casual restaurants and big-box stores
Due to Plympton’s rural and residential nature, residents head to nearby communities for shopping and dining. “Depending on what side of town you’re on, you can go into Plymouth, Kingston or Halifax,” Cohen says. In Halifax, to the west, locals can access a variety of casual restaurants like Loco Larry’s Tacos and Nonnie’s Italian Grille, as well as a Walmart Supercenter for necessities. At the intersection of Route 58 and Highway 44 south of Plympton, locals can get groceries at Shaw’s or pick up prescriptions at CVS Pharmacy. The Carving Crossing shopping plaza has a handful of other convenient local businesses and eateries, including chains such as McDonald’s and casual stop-ins like Cornerstones Pub & Grill.

Nearby train stations in Halifax, Kingston and Plymouth connect commuters to surrounding communities and into Boston, 41 miles north. “Commuting is fairly easy because of the train stations, and highway access is easy too,” Cohen says. Most residents rely on their own cars to get around. Highway 44 is just south of the town, connecting drivers east to Route 3 and west to Interstate 495.
