In the heart of all things trendy
Belmont — not to be confused with the Gaston County city — is a Charlotte neighborhood where historic trappings meet modern style. It’s the southernmost part of Charlotte’s Mill District, where 19th- and 20th-century textile mills have been transformed into an array of housing, restaurants and retail. “It’s a vibrant, historic neighborhood embracing diversity and celebrating community,” says Belmont Community Association Vice President Taylor Jones. Greenery is abundant, with a colorful public rose garden and a popular greenway steps away from some homes. Bonnie Stroup, a broker with Dickens Mitchener Real Estate, characterizes Belmont as one of Charlotte’s hottest up-and-coming areas. “It’s come a long way in the last 15 years,” she says. “It’s smack dab between Uptown, Plaza Midwood, Villa Heights and NoDa, so it’s a fantastic location. It’s the perfect mix of residential, multi-family, commercial and retail.” With its proximity to some of Charlotte’s trendiest districts and many unique businesses of its own, Belmont offers a lifestyle that falls somewhere in between urban and suburban.

From 1900s bungalows to million-dollar new builds
Though many Belmont houses were built in the 21st century, some date back to the early 1900s. Craftsman-style homes and bungalows are common among the neighborhood’s oldest homes, though a few ranch-style homes also appear. Sharp transitional-style houses have emerged throughout the neighborhood in recent years, and ultra-modern townhouses and condos fill the southern section. While prices start at $400,000 for a dated bungalow needing renovations, prices climb about $1 million for spacious new builds. “It’s an investor hotspot, too, because it’s so up-and-coming. A good portion of Belmont had been neglected for a while, so investors came in and snatched things up and built all these townhouses at a high price point,” Stroup says. Townhouses typically list between $400,000 and $850,000.

Charlotte's best burger and sustainable kombucha
Sidewalks flank most residential blocks in Belmont, both in its moderately wooded northern section and its concrete-heavy southern section. Most residents are less than a 15-minute walk from some of the neighborhood’s best-known restaurants, including Ace No. 3. Jones says this build-your-own-burger joint has “the best burger in Charlotte,” and Charlotte Magazine agrees. Right across the street, locals can keep the evening going with drinks and florals at Bloom & Bottle’s bar or go for a round of cornhole on the patio at Sweet Lew’s BBQ. One block west, Super Abari Game Bar invites nostalgic gamers to play 100-plus vintage arcade and pinball titles while sipping a cocktail. Belmont also features the Innovation Barn, a wholly sustainable, waste-free, indoor-outdoor hangout space. “The Innovation Barn houses businesses focused on not just sustainability but total circularity,” Jones says. “It’s one of the only places like that in the United States.” Visitors can explore on-site aquaponics and composting facilities and enjoy fresh-from-the-tap beer, kombucha and hard seltzer.

Smell the roses while sipping rosé
Beer, wine and coffee are also available at Rosie’s Coffee & Wine Garden, part of Belmont’s McGill Rose Garden. Since 1967, this small, secluded floral showcase has invited Charlotteans to stroll past rows of colorful roses beneath the vine-covered trees. It’s been a local go-to for Mother’s Day since its inception. Open-air outdoor activities abound just south at Alexander Park, a public green space with a playground, a soccer field and six tennis courts. It’s also one of Belmont’s multiple access points to the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, an urban mixed-use path that carries bikers and pedestrians throughout the Mill District. “The greenway connects most of Charlotte, and it’s so easy to access in the heart of Belmont,” Stroup says. Continuing east along the greenway, residents can get their hands dirty at the Little Sugar Green Community Garden or take a dip at the Cornelia Park pool.

Walkability and public transit are king
Residents love Belmont for its walkability to the city’s bustling business center. “People who work Uptown love Belmont because they can walk to the office,” Stroup says. “You can also walk to the light rail stop and get all the way down to Pineville or up to University City if you need to.” The Parkwood LYNX Blue Line light rail stop is a few blocks from the neighborhood’s northern end. Long-distance commuters have near-immediate access to Interstate 277 and Independence Freeway, connecting drivers to destinations far outside Uptown. Meanwhile, arts, music and sporting events at Spectrum Center and Bank of America Stadium are all within easy reach. “It’s tough being a Panthers or Hornets fan lately, but you can’t beat the $8 Uber,” Jones says. “That’s less than you’d end up paying for parking in Uptown.”
