Trendy and urban Windy City neighborhood
Bucktown got its name from the goats kept by the many Polish immigrants who lived here in the 19th century. Bucktown has long since transformed into a trendy and urbanized neighborhood within a few miles of the Chicago Loop. The area is often bustling with people on their way to activities like yoga, drinks and dinner at one of many diverse eateries. The 606 trail borders Bucktown to the south, giving its users overlooking views of the surrounding cityscape. A prominent artist community in the 1990s, the neighborhood now draws professionals ranging from doctors and chief executives to photographers and even some pro athletes. For Sophia Klopas, co-team lead of the Klopas Stratton Team at Berkshire Hathaway, this Windy City neighborhood has everything. “We have great transportation. We have tons of restaurants and shopping, including designer boutiques. We also have pretty good neighborhood schools, and in comparison, we’re more affordable than our eastern neighbors,” she says.
19th century workers cottages and upscale contemporaries and condos
Bucktown consists of dense sections of single-family homes and multi-story buildings housing a mix of condos, apartments and businesses. Colorful murals, stylish graffiti and billboards adorn a few buildings, while groups of mature maple and American basswood trees throughout the neighborhood soften its urban look. The housing ranges from the late 19th century to today, and single-family homes mainly consist of contemporary builds and the workers cottages common across Chicago. Bucktown also has timber lofts, which are repurposed industrial buildings holding condos with distinct timber beams across their ceilings. “They have a lot of character. It’s like the quintessential Chicago thing, these timber lofts,” says Samuel Ciochon, a broker with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate. Some of the smallest and oldest homes can run between $600,000 and $800,000, but few costs fall within that range. Most single-family homes cost between $900,000 and $1.8 million. Condos have a wider range of pricing, but the largest units reach around $1 million.

Bucktown’s ‘super foodie centric’ scene
Bucktown falls into Logan Square, a larger community Ciochon describes as “super foodie centric.” Many eateries here have also livened up the dining scene by turning portions of sidewalks into outdoor patios. The Irazu Costa Rican Restaurant is among several Latin options. Li’l Guys’ patrons enjoy homemade sandwiches in a casual space. Lottie’s Pub serves comfort meals and beers in a space with festive decor. Le Bouchon is a popular French bistro, while those looking to try out Chicago’s famous deep-dish pies can go to My Pi Pizza. Residents looking for late night hangouts will also find many small bars across the neighborhood. TRUCE is a popular spot for cocktails. Olivia’s Market is a small upscale grocery store, but those looking to shop in bulk can go to Costco Wholesale.

Scenic city views on The 606
One of Bucktown’s main outdoor amenities is The 606, formerly an elevated rail line that is now an inter-neighborhood trail for many walkers, joggers and bikers. Formally called the Bloomingdale Trail, the nearly 3-mile path offers views of the city with scenic overlook points. The space also features many trees, gardens, an observatory and public art installations. “It’s super dog friendly. Everyone brings their dogs on the path, and there’s also two dog parks in the neighborhood, which is crazy,” Ciochon says. The 3-acre Holstein Park is another popular green space, and its amenities include an outdoor Olympic-size pool, a fieldhouse with two gyms and softball and baseball fields. Many here also enjoy walks across the neighborhood, and the streetscape notably provides green-colored lanes for bikers.

Garden Walk and the Bucktown Arts Fest
Bucktown hosts a Garden Walk every summer, allowing residents to pass through and look at nearly 100 home gardens. Those attending can enjoy beers and listen to live music as they admire some public art. The event also includes a petting zoo. The Bucktown Arts Fest at Holstein Park in August showcases the work of nearly 200 artists. Over the years, pieces have ranged from classical sculptures to a painted portrait of Michael Jordan. The neighborhood is also close to Wicker Park Fest, considered one of Chicago’s most anticipated summer celebrations.

Students may start at Jonathan Burr Elementary School, which gets a B-plus from ratings site Niche. The Friends of Burr nonprofit raises funds for the school and helps students access resources not typically covered in its operating budget. These efforts have led to the addition of classes in subjects like music, dance, STEM and Japanese. Students may then attend Pulaski International School, which gets a B-plus and serves students from prekindergarten to eighth grade. Wells Community Academy High School gets a C-plus from Niche. The all-girls Josephinum Academy in neighboring Wicker Park offers a private option and gets an A from Niche.

L and Metra rail services
The L and Metra rail services each operate stations in the neighborhood. Trains include the L’s Blue Line and Metra’s Union Pacific North and Northwest lines. Additionally, the Chicago Transit Authority provides several bus stops throughout Bucktown. Interstate 90 runs through the middle of the neighborhood, providing a route to downtown Chicago about 5 miles south. The highway also goes to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, about 12 miles west. Bucktown sits about 5 miles north of the Illinois Medical District, one of the largest campuses of its kind in the country. The UI Health university hospital is among the institutions.
