Murals of farmland, railroads and historic homes point to Irving Park’s roots in Chicago. Development in the area predates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which eventually drove more people to Irving Park as city infrastructure was reformed. Character-rich homes, spacious parks and locally owned restaurants bring the neighborhood to life and give it a secluded feel from the bustling city center, 8.5 miles away. “You’re within walking distance of a farmers market and Independence Park,” says Linda Quinn, a broker with Coldwell Banker. “I’ve sold to families there who had little ones and absolutely loved that they had those things within steps of the homes. It’s a great location that also has easy access to the commuter rails. It’s suburban, but you still have all the amenities of the city within reach.”

Several community parks and athletic centers dot the neighborhood and line the North Branch Chicago River. Mature trees and walking paths greet visitors to Independence Park. The historic green space spans 9 acres and has a large playground on a rubberized surface, with unique features like zip lines and saucer swings. The park also has an indoor space with a pool, a basketball court and a fitness center so people can still exercise during the frigid Chicago winters. A neighborhood-run farmers market opens up to locals from June through October, where they can participate in book swaps, sip on coffee or buy fresh produce from local vendors. McFetridge Sports Center sits on the neighborhood’s eastern end and has become a hub for neighbors to learn how to ice skate or play a game of hockey. Lessons are offered to people of all ages. There are also tennis programs, dance and yoga classes. California Park sits along the banks of the North Branch Chicago River. It offers miles of walking and biking trails that connect to larger green spaces like Horner Park and Clark Park.

Irving Park is packed with personality, showcased through diverse restaurants. Lizard’s Liquid Lounge looks unassuming from the outside, but stepping inside will reveal walls lined with eclectic artwork and live bands performing. The true neighborhood bar is drinks-only and dog-friendly, though they do offer free popcorn. Stop by on Saturday nights for karaoke. There’s plenty of international cuisine close by. D’Candela Restaurant serves authentic Peruvian chicken, while House of Wah Sun is a go-to for Chinese takeout. Smoque is perhaps the most popular spot near Irving Park, attracting visitors from across the city who want a taste of their smoked brisket. ALDI and Jewel-Osco are within 1.5 miles of the neighborhood for grocery runs.

Specialized magnet programs offered to students
Students living in Irving Park may begin their education at Murphy Elementary School or Cleveland Elementary School. Each earns a B-minus rating from Niche and serves students in kindergarten through eighth grades. Murphy Elementary has been a staple in the community since the 1920s and offers a magnet program in Fine and Performing Arts. Past partnerships through the program have included Old Town School of Music and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As part of the City of Chicago School District 299, students later filter into C-rated Schurz High School, which features specialized programs in dual language and food science.

Taking the L to downtown Chicago
Stops along the Metra and Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue L line are available to reach other parts of the city. Bus stops are also scattered along Irving Park Road.
