A railroad stop turned residential
Starting out as a small railroad crossing in the mid-1800s, Park Manor is now a quiet residential community about 11 miles south of downtown Chicago. Bordered by train tracks in the east, the area began as a magnet for small businesses seeking the patronage of railway travelers. Residents no longer rely on the train to take them downtown, though, as they can easily drive using Interstate 94 or the Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge, which border the neighborhood.

The cozy community of Park Manor is a hub for small businesses. Josephine’s Southern Cooking, frequented by the late singer Aretha Franklin and known for its soul food, provides locals a friendly atmosphere for hosting events or simply enjoying a good Southern-style meal. Josephine’s features soul food classics such as fried chicken, cornbread and catfish, as well as a few New Orleans favorites, including gumbo and jambalaya. Further north off 71st Street, Doughboy’s Chicago wins over patrons with its famous "spaghedough," the owner's savory, saucy take on traditional spaghetti. Less than a mile south, locals can stop by Lem’s Bar-B-Q, an independently owned and operated spot where patrons can walk up to the window to purchase rib tips, fried chicken and hot links. Additionally, fast-food chains can be found in the neighborhood’s southern side for a quick bite on the go. Locals can access grocery stores and pharmacies such as Aldi and Walgreens within the borders of Park Manor, and a variety of small businesses and shops can be found off East 79th Street.

Several public, private and charter schools await young learners, including Park Manor Elementary School and Ruggles Elementary School. Wendell Phillips Academy High School first opened its doors in 1904, and, today, serves 700 of the area's students and earns a C-minus overall grade from Niche. Phillips Academy also partners with a number of Chicago educational programs that assist at-risk youth and challenged communities with accessing educational resources.
A park nearly a century old
Just south of 71st Street, residents can find Meyering Park, which has served the community since 1926. Meyering Park features a fieldhouse with two multipurpose rooms, a playground, a splash pad, multiuse sports fields and a basketball court. Additionally, walkers can use the gravel path that circles the park’s almost-four-acre span.
Historical landmarks near the neighborhood
Just east of Park Manor sits Oak Woods Cemetery, the most historically significant cemetery within Chicago city limits. This landmark provides maps for self-guided walking tours, pointing out the final resting places of such historical figures as civil rights activist Ida B. Wells, Olympic track star Jesse Owens and Chicago’s first African-American mayor, Harold Washington.
