Bars and restaurants
Just south of the corner of Division and State is where State and Rush Street separate, creating a triangle. This area is referred to by some as the “Viagra Triangle” as it’s popular among affluent older men who take out younger ladies to some of the high-end restaurants and bars. “This area is active from lunchtime to long after midnight,” says Grigory Pekarsky, a broker-owner with over 15 years of experience with Vesta Preferred LLC. “It’s a great people-watching area.” One of those restaurants is Gibsons Bar and Steakhouse, where reservations are recommended, even if dining around 9 or 10 at night. Next door is Hugo’s Frog Bar & Fish House, a sister restaurant to Gibsons, specializing in the surf part of surf and turf. The New York Times once said of Hugo’s that “the fish could only be fresher if it swam in by itself.” Dublin’s Bar & Grill is one of the businesses opening early in this area, serving breakfast all day with daily hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Epic Burger uses Black Angus Beef for something more casual and has turkey and plant-based options. Jewel-Osco is near the intersection of Division and Clark for grocery runs.Affordable luxury
While there is the occasional single-family home from the late 1800s in this neighborhood, most of what’s available are condos. They could be a one-bedroom unit over 3,000 square feet going between $200,000 and $400,000 or a 50th-floor penthouse unit with great views of Lake Michigan that might cost you $10 million in other parts of the country. “That’s not Chicago,” says Pekarsky. “It’ll be over a million, but not anything over a couple million.” There are some 1880s brownstone architecture single-family homes with five bedrooms and over 4,000 square feet between $1 and $2 million. Most buildings that date back that far were built after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 as part of the rebuilding process. Seventy-one percent of the people in Rush-Division are renters.Small park with a fountain
Land was donated to the City of Chicago in the 1840s for the 3-acre Washington Square Park. It has various diagonal walkways that converge at the centerpiece fountain. Until 2021, the park hosted the Bughouse Square Debates, an open-forum discussion that recalled the history of hosting various speakers who stood on soapboxes speaking of the day's issues. Another park can be found at another triangle of intersections at Rush, Wabash and Chestnut Streets. Connors Park is about half an acre with various benches where shoppers often rest after hours. There’s also a Jeni’s Ice Creams location in the park.Schools and a library
Ogden Elementary School East Campus is in the Rush-Division neighborhood and has kindergarten through fourth-grade students. The Jenner Campus, only about a mile away, has fifth through sixth-grade students. Both schools get a B-minus grade on Niche. Lincoln Park High School is rated an A, and first-year students coming into the school can take World Languages like Arabic, Mandarin or Spanish. Freshmen are in a separate building on the west side of the campus, providing a smoother transition from elementary school to high school. The buildings on both sides of Rush Street are part of Loyola University of Chicago. It’s one of the largest Catholic universities in the country, with over 17,000 students. The Newberry Library has about 1.6 million books covering six centuries of history dating to the 15th century. Some items in the library include over 700 American Revolutionary pamphlets and handwritten scores by Mozart, Chopin and others.Red Line bus or train
Anywhere in the neighborhood is close to either a bus or train stop with the Chicago Transit Authority. CTA bus stops on the red line are on roads like State Street and Chicago Avenue. The Red Line subway station is at the corner of State and Chicago. The urban setting means plenty of sidewalks and bike riding opportunities on city streets. The neighborhood is also a mile from Oak Street Beach on the Lake Michigan shoreline and the 900-bed Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a highly-ranked teaching medical center.
