Robust culture in West Ridge
West Ridge—also known as West Rogers Park—is a community with strong ethnic, religious and historical ties that have attracted Chicagoans to the area for more than a century. After WWI, immigrants of international descent flocked to the neighborhood’s bungalows, creating a melting pot of cultures that thrives to this day. “You’re within city limits, but it’s very residential so it feels like living in the suburbs,” explains Helen Bailey, a local Realtor with Pioneer Realty Group. “Proximity to places of worship is important to a lot of people. You’ve got a lot of parks and families walking around; you see a lot of kids in the area—those are all selling points.” Enveloping the vibrance of Devon Avenue and some of the city’s most historic Jewish communities, West Ridge remains a thriving hub.

Historic bungalows and classic Midwestern Prairies
The Talman West Ridge Bungalow Historic District stretches across the neighborhood, an array of nearly 200 classic Chicago bungalows constructed in the early 20th century. Typically made of brick, these homes offer unique flares like steep, pitched roofs and bay windows with modest yards extending to the sidewalk. “A lot of people go for the bungalow because it’s an architectural staple in Chicago,” Bailey says. “They’re quite attractive, big and historically more affordable.” It’s not uncommon to spot neat gardens or wide road verges, where the occasional Prairie-style home characterizes West Ridge as truly Midwestern. These single-family homes range in price between $300,000 to around $700,000. Towering condo buildings offer units with less than 1,000 square feet for around $100,000, while larger units can reach $800,000. Meanwhile, townhomes typically hover between $250,000 and $500,000.

The vibrance of Devon Avenue
The community of West Ridge is home to Little India, a 15-block stretch of Devon Avenue offering a multiplicity of Indian and Pakistani boutiques and eateries. Uru-Swati is a go-to for vegan and vegetarian provisions, while Sukhadia’s specializes in sweets like jilebis and mango milkshakes. As for groceries, visitors frequent Patel Brothers for everything from spiced pickles to ready-to-cook parathas. Next door is the produce-heavy Fresh Farms International Market, but daily staples are also shopped at ALDI down the street. Yeowoosai serves Korean specialties beneath TVs displaying colorful K-pop music videos, and North Shore Kosher Bakery serves Jewish specialties from rugelach to yeast hamantaschen. As for traditional American fare, residents of West Ridge head to Honeybear Café for maximalist breakfasts and eclectic artwork.

Celebrating unique cultures with Chicago Public Schools
Local students begin their studies at the Mosaic School of Fine Arts, where visual and performing arts programs foster creativity in various disciplines. Earning a B-minus on Niche, the public school enrolls kindergarten through eighth-grade students who speak more than 30 unique native languages. This celebration of cultural differences is continued at Mather High School, considered the most diverse secondary school in Chicago, with a grade of B on Niche. Paired with more than 25 athletic teams and 30 electives, the school’s annual Ethnic Fest includes an International Food Bazaar for students to show off their favorite dishes. West Ridge Elementary School also feeds into Mather High. With a B-minus on Niche, the school is easily walkable for many kindergarten through eighth-grade students.

Biking the North Branch Trail System
Indian Boundary Park is one of the most popular green spaces in West Ridge, with a historic fieldhouse, community garden, lagoon and nature play space that was formerly a zoo. Each summer, visitors gather for free movies on an inflatable screen. Warren Park is the largest, however, with ball courts and fields, as well as a 9-hole golf course and a seasonal ice rink. “There’s a bike path along the river that’s pretty unique because you’re off city streets for miles,” Bailey explains, referring to the North Branch Trail System. “It wraps all the way through the suburbs—more than 15 miles of unobstructed path. If someone is an ambitious commuter, they can actually bike to work.” Accessible from Sidney Yates Flatwoods—less than 4 miles east—the trail connects to a handful of green spaces, including Edgebrook Woods.

The commuter lifestyle in West Ridge
The community of West Ridge is about 12 miles north of downtown Chicago. “You’re close to the suburbs without being in the suburbs,” Bailey says. “City employees have to live within city boundaries, so many of them live here because they can have a suburban lifestyle within city limits.” Commuters can easily rely on CTA bus stops throughout the neighborhood, though Rogers Park station takes riders 30 minutes to Ogilvie Center. “It’s not too far from the highway either,” she continues, referring to Interstate 90. “Commuting is easy, but there aren’t any L stops within walking distance.” Those looking to catch the Red or Purple Lines can head to nearby Howard, Jarvis or Morse stations. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 12 miles east on Devon Avenue, while the closest emergency room is located within Swedish Hospital, 2 miles south.
