Casablanca Vintage, Shake It Records, Tickle Pickle and more
In the Northside Business District, murals add color to the streetscapes, and tattoo shops like Skincraft highlight the creative nature of this community. Nearby, Casablanca Vintage offers curated 20th-century clothing. “Most of the time, people bring us things to sell that they’ve inherited,” Cook says. Shake It Records has become the go-to spot for music lovers, while Collective Espresso offers classic lattes. Inside the coffee shop, there is booth seating and a wall plastered with posters promoting local creative happenings. Next door, Happy Chicks Bakery serves vegan treats. For American classics, Tickle Pickle features burgers named after rock and roll artists. Northside also offers late-night options like Humble Monk, a brewery with a rotating schedule of trivia nights and pet adoption days. There’s also Good Judy's, a dive bar known for its drag shows. For groceries, Clifton Market is 2 miles away.
Rock N' Roll Carnival and other events
The neighborhood's biggest event is the annual three-day Rock N' Roll Carnival, known for its Fourth of July parade. "People come from all over the city. The parade isn't any traditional parade; the men's drill team is a group of men with power drills, and lawn-chair ladies dance around with 70s- and 80s-style lawn chairs," Stoughton says. "At the end of the parade, everyone joins in, flooding into the streets to dance to music — it's vibrant." The festival features music of all genres — not just rock — and food trucks. This popular event has recently expanded; now, smaller, similar musical gatherings — sans the parade — make up the Northside Summer Slideshow. Other events in the community include the Northside House Tour, which takes participants through the community's historic homes, and the year-round Wednesday Northside Farmers Market.A diverse architectural scene
Northside is laid out in a grid. Here, homes sit side by side, flanking sidewalk-lined streets on which many people park. They typically sit atop modest, hilly lots that feature staircases and terraced gardens. Most of these properties date back to the late 1800s or early 1900s, reflecting everything from Italianate designs with elaborate trims to Colonial Revivals. Bungalows and Victorians with spacious porches are also common here. While some of these homes have received full renovations in recent years, most have maintained their historic facades. Depending on the property’s size, location and condition, prices range from $150,000 to $500,000, with the median single-family home price settling at $275,000. The community is also home to some newer apartment complexes. Buyers should be aware that Northside receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 5 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.Buttercup Valley Preserve, Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum and more
Northside’s Buttercup Valley Preserve offers wooded and paved pathways. At the adjacent Parkers Woods Nature Preserve, trails wind through beech and oak trees, some of which have been around for over 200 years and stretch more than 100 feet tall. Just east, the Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum offers a peaceful and meditative space with dogwoods and seasonal flowers like peonies and hibiscuses. Ribboning paths wind through the cemetery, allowing visitors to take a reflective walk while appreciating the natural scenery. Just west, Mt. Airy Forest offers everything from a disc golf course to hiking paths. For indoor activities, the McKie Recreation Center features its own fitness center and community garden. For other options, there's the nearby Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. In 2024, USA Today readers voted it the nation’s No. 1 botanical garden. The award-winning Walnut Hills High and other schooling options
Children can enroll in the Cincinnati City School District, which offers choice enrollment opportunities and serves over 35,000 students. Kindergarten through sixth grade students can attend Chase Elementary, which receives a C rating from Niche. The school features a curated Arts & Culture Program, which partners with local organizations like the Cincinnati Arts Association, encouraging students to participate in creative and musical opportunities. For Grades 7 through 12, students can attend A-plus-rated Walnut Hills High School, which Niche ranks in the top 3% of public middle and high schools nationwide. This 2023 National Blue Ribbon School offers the most AP courses of any school in the country.
A bicycle cooperative, public transportation and more
Many residents walk or bike around the community — the neighborhood's volunteer-run MoBo Bicycle Co-op works to promote cycling. For farther commutes, Cincinnati’s Metro buses offer connections to downtown Cincinnati. Line 27 can get residents to the city center in about 40 minutes. By car, downtown Cincinnati is a 7-mile drive via Interstate 75, which, with Interstate 74, forms the community’s southern border. While major employers like UC Health, Procter & Gamble and the Great American Insurance Group are all under 10 miles away, many Northside residents work within their community as skilled laborers or creatives. The neighborhood is also home to some students at the University of Cincinnati, which is under 3 miles away via Ludlow Avenue. For travel days, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is about 18 miles away via I-75.
