South of Franklin Park Conservatory, historic properties intertwine with newer postmodern homes and condominiums. Duplexes are common in Franklin Park, often converted from turn-of-the-century builds. These brick Four Squares vary in design, some flaunting Prairie-style architecture while others draw from more colorful or classical influences. Next door, Columbus Brewing Company Beer Hall is the oldest craft brewery in the city, occupying a massive brick building with science fiction murals and comfy booths. The Trolley District’s haunts house plenty of animated events for locals, including live music Fridays and trivia nights at The Railhouse, as well as Market Yoga on the mezzanine and game day brunches during NFL season. Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, however, are a huge hit with the greater Columbus community. The calendar of events features everything from cooking and botany classes to ticketed exhibitions, a weekly farmers market and seasonal events, including Conservatory Aglow in the winter and Blooms & Butterflies in the spring. “King Arts Complex is also nearby,” Hamrick says. “They host a lot of unique cultural events open to the public.” Farther downtown, Franklin Park’s residents are privy to citywide events like the Columbus Arts Festival and Oktoberfest, less than 3 miles away.
Less than 3 miles from Downtown Columbus
Franklin Park is well connected to the greater Columbus suburbs, with many of its residents commuting deeper into the city for work. Positioned less than 3 miles from the downtown scene, folks have easy access to the city’s COTA bus stops found on East Broad Street. They also benefit from the concentration of nearby medical centers, including Ohio State East Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. East Broad Street is the closest thoroughfare, heading west to downtown and east into Bexley and Whitehall. Travelers can rely on state Route 62 and Interstate 670 to reach John Glenn Columbus International Airport less than 5 miles north.
Walkable green spaces
Anchored by Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the neighborhood’s most vibrant green spaces are within walking distance of most residences. Locals and guests can explore the area’s botanical history at the conservatory’s many historic buildings. Plenty of expansive parks surround the shores of Alum Creek, which runs parallel to the neighborhood’s east side. Academy Park is home to the Cleo Dumaree Athletic Complex, as well as baseball fields and a basketball court. Visitors can follow the Alum Creek Trail north to Wolfe Park for its tennis courts and soccer fields. Several community gardens are also scattered throughout the area for residents to enjoy.
Private and public schooling options
Students are zoned for Columbus City Schools, beginning at Fairwood Alternative Elementary School, with a C-minus on Niche. Champion Middle School earns a D-plus, though many families opt for nearby private options like St. Catharine School, enrolling kindergarten through eighth grade. East High, home of the Tigers, also earns a C-minus on Niche. The school offers nearly 40 Career-Technical Education (CTE) programs for students to get a head start on their professional careers prior to graduation. Residents can also consider several community charter school options, such as A+ Arts Academy.
