Eastgate is a tucked-away spot with easy access to jobs and schools

Between the Norfolk and Western Railway, Interstate 670 and Alum Creek, Eastgate is tucked away from the rest of the Near East Side district in Columbus. Despite this, the neighborhood’s location keeps it close to popular attractions, schools and job hubs. Buyers are often drawn to the area for its historic and midcentury homes, which tend to sell at lower prices than those in nearby communities.

What homes look like and how much they typically cost

Eastgate’s residential streets are lined with narrow sidewalks and plenty of maple trees. Most lots are under a fifth of an acre and have well-kept landscaping. Attached garages are rare, so people usually rely on street parking or a carport. Homes were mostly built in the early 1900s and midcentury, and you’ll see a lot of updated Cape Cod and National Folk-style designs. Prices typically land in the high $100,000s to the high $300,000s, with a median in the high $200,000s. This often makes Eastgate less expensive than nearby areas like Woodland Park, Franklin Park and Bexley, but more than Shepard, Devon Triangle and Mount Vernon. Kevin Hart, an advisor with KW Commercial, says that these homes and the neighborhood’s location make Eastgate “a little hidden gem.”

Easy access to parks, schools and major job hubs

Hart says that Eastgate’s location is another big selling point, with easy access to places like Franklin Park Conservatory and St. Charles Preparatory School. Bordered by I-670, U.S. Route 62 and state Route 16, residents have plenty of ways to get around Columbus. Major job hubs like downtown, Ohio State Outpatient Care East, the Columbus VA Medical Center and the John Glenn Columbus International Airport are all within 5 miles. Thanks to sidewalks and shade trees, “the neighborhood is very walkable for residents,” explains K. Emily Manley, a realtor with e-Merge Real Estate. Central Ohio Transit Authority bus stops run along Nelson Road and Greenway Avenue.

What public, private and charter school options serve Eastgate

Eastgate is zoned for Columbus City Schools and is home to Eastgate Elementary School, which is located at the neighborhood’s center. From there, many students will attend Champions Middle School and East High School, each about a mile away in King-Lincoln Bronzeville and Woodland Park, respectively. The surrounding area also has several private and charter schools, including St. Charles Preparatory School, Mansion Day School and Columbus Performance Academy Shepard. Columbus City Schools mostly uses a lottery to place students in magnets and other programs, so getting in usually comes down to available seats. The district also offers open enrollment and out-of-district transfers, but those follow set policies and depend on availability.
