How Mount Vernon’s location supports commuting and walkability
At the northern end of Columbus ’s historic Near East Side community, Mount Vernon is a neighborhood of turn-of-the-20th-century and midcentury homes that’s seen significant revitalization in recent years. Many people point to its location near two major intersections and just outside the area’s main hospital as a plus for commuting and getting around the city. With several nearby parks, local businesses and schools, the neighborhood is also a popular spot for people getting around on foot.
A mix of historic homes, new builds and price points
Though most locals rent, there are still plenty of homes for sale in the area. Buyers will find a mix of remodeled early 20th-century homes, including American Foursquares with expansive front porches and gable-front National-style houses. Smaller options like Cape Cods and bungalows are also common, many lining walkable streets where parallel parking is the norm. New construction has started to pop up as well, with designs intended to blend in with the neighborhood’s historic character. “We’re seeing a rebound of new businesses, housing and investment,” says Al Edmondson, President of the Mount Vernon District Improvement Association. “The new buildings that are going up are a complement to our neighborhood.” Homes typically sell between $80,000 and the mid-$200,000s, with a median around $200,000. That is generally more expensive than Devon Triangle, Shepard and Milo-Grogan, but less than Woodland Park and Discovery District. Renovated duplexes are also popular, with units usually selling between the low $200,000s and low $300,000s.
Many homes in Mount Vernon are undergoing renovations, preserving historic charm while modernizing.

What families should know about schools and enrollment choices
Mount Vernon is zoned for Columbus City Schools, which has two elementary schools in the neighborhood: Trevitt Elementary School and Beatty Park Elementary School. In 2025, Beatty Park was named a Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School for its focus on inclusion of students with disabilities in athletics and leadership. Champion Middle School is just outside the neighborhood, while East High School is about a mile away.
Columbus City Schools gives families several ways to choose a school, including magnet programs, a districtwide lottery for schools outside a student’s assigned zone and open enrollment for some out-of-district students. Where a student lands depends on district policies, program requirements, available space and lottery results.

Easy access to highways, buses and walkable routes downtown
Mount Vernon’s location right next to Interstates 670 and 71 makes it appealing to commuters. However, there are options for anyone trying to avoid the highway. “You can take Long Street and Broad Street into downtown in less than 10 minutes,” says Thomas Hamrick, a lifelong Columbus resident and Realtor with Keller Williams Consultants. “It’s a pretty pedestrian-friendly area, so you can walk into parts of downtown like the Discovery District, as well.” Two branches of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center are off Leonard and Taylor avenues, both within walking distance for many residents. Central Ohio Transit Authority offers a bus service with stops along North Champion and Mount Vernon avenues.
The swimming pool in Saunders Park is popular in the summer.
Parks, trails and community spaces close to home
Along with plenty of public parks, the Near East Side also has community centers and entertainment venues. That means locals are often within walking distance of something fun to do:
Saunders Park is near the center of the neighborhood and features athletic courts and a six-lane lap pool with two slides and a water spray area.
The King Arts Complex is a longtime hub that hosts live performances, exhibits and community events celebrating Black art, culture and history in Columbus.
The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is known for its glasshouse displays, rotating exhibitions and indoor and outdoor gardens.
The Alum Creek Trail is a paved, creekside path locals use for biking, jogging, and long walks that stretch from Westerville to Groveport.
The Fran Ryan Center is a neighborhood-friendly recreation spot on the Near East Side with a pool, gym, fitness classes and programs for all ages.
The Kings Art Complex in Mount Vernon celebrates African American art, culture and history.
Limited retail close by, with local eateries filling the gap
Retail options in the neighborhood itself are pretty limited, and the closest supermarket is a Kroger in Franklin Park, about 3 miles away. For boutiques and locally owned spots, people usually head toward downtown neighborhoods like German Village or to North High Street, while bigger names like Walmart, Target and Macy’s are closer to 10 miles away in Easton. Locally owned eateries, however, are a regular sight. At Creole Kitchen, you can get a quick taste of New Orleans with dishes like crawfish etouffee or catfish with grits and eggs. The tiny hole-in-the-wall spot is mostly takeout, but tables fill up fast on nights when live jazz music plays. Yawning Bear Bread Co. is a local bakery known for using local grains.
