Why Milo-Grogan is getting attention from locals and developers

With its street murals, local arts scene and renovated historic homes, Milo-Grogan is known as one of Columbus' more eclectic neighborhoods. Since the Milo Arts District campus opened in 1988, residents have supported a small but tightly knit arts community that mirrors the early days of Short North. That growing creative identity, along with easy access to nearby Columbus hot spots, has helped spark renewed interest from developers.

Older homes, duplexes and prices shaped by an artsy vibe

The well-worn streets are lined with early 20th-century homes in all kinds of shape, from past their prime to fully renovated. Early American Foursquare and Craftsman homes shape the look and feel of the neighborhood, and newer builds tend to follow that style with a few New Traditional touches mixed in. Prices generally range from around $100,000 to the high $300,000s depending on condition. Many homes have been converted into duplexes, which usually fall between the low $100,000s and low $200,000s. The local median price for a single-family home lands in the mid-$100,000s, putting Milo-Grogan in line with nearby neighborhoods like South Linden, Devon Triangle and Mount Vernon, and well below what many buyers spend in the Discovery District, Italian Village or Weinland Park.

Local groups like Milo Arts and the city of Columbus have played a big part in pushing the neighborhood forward, and mixed-use projects coming to the northeast end are expected to bring more housing along with new retail and dining. “It’s all about trying to sustain the values of who’s already here while making it more relevant to newcomers,” says Julia Barrett, former president of Milo Arts. That mindset and the area’s growing art scene have definitely shaped the community’s reputation. “Milo-Grogan… is a lot more artsy,” says Lawrence Gohring, a broker with Veterans Plus Real Estate Advisors. “A lot of freelance artists and so-forth out there.”

Columbus City Schools and access to Ohio State campus

The neighborhood is zoned for Columbus City Schools, one of the largest districts in Ohio. Older students may attend Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, where they can take Advanced Placement courses and credentialed pathway classes that focus on building skills for future careers.

The area is about 2 miles from The Ohio State University’s main campus, which is well known for programs in engineering, business and medicine. Even more recognizable to many is Buckeyes football, which plays a huge role in campus life and in how Columbus feels on fall Saturdays.

Easy highway access with buses and walkable blocks

Interstate 71 cuts right through the middle of Milo-Grogan, with Interstate 670 along the neighborhood’s southern edge. Those highways make it easy to get around Columbus, and places like the Arena District, Short North and downtown are roughly 2 miles away. Being so close to I-71, I-670, major rail lines and the airport can mean more noise from cars, trains and planes. Sidewalks are everywhere, which makes it fairly easy to walk to nearby restaurants, stores and other homes. For longer trips, Central Ohio Transit Authority buses run along Cleveland and Fields avenues.

Community center, small parks and garden spaces nearby

While Milo-Grogan doesn’t have many public parks, locals aren’t stuck playing indoors all the time. The neighborhood still has a few ways to burn off energy or spend time in nature:

  • The Milo-Grogan Community Center has a gym, weight room, art facilities and a kitchen.
  • The Milo-Grogan Park has 2 acres of open fields, plus basketball and pickleball courts.
  • The Milo-Grogan Green Space and Community Garden on Cleveland Avenue attracts butterflies every day with its milk thistles and other plants.
  • Beginnings Park offers an acre of greenspace with a playground, basketball courts and an open-air shelter.

Limited shopping nearby with more options a short drive away

The closest grocery store is the Kroger in Weinland Park, about 1 mile away. Most shopping and fast food spots are clustered near 5th Avenue, with local places like Royal Fish Shrimp & Chicken and Wang’s Chinese Kitchen mixed in. Ohio Brewing Company serves pub food and craft beers on tap inside a converted cardboard warehouse. For even more dining and shopping, Short North and Italian Village are just a couple of miles away.

A growing live music and arts scene

"A few years ago, nobody knew what Milo Arts was, even though it was doing really cool things," Barrett says. The Milo Arts organization leads the neighborhood’s emerging arts scene from the former Milo Elementary School building. Reflecting the area’s old-meets-new energy, the late 19th-century building now works with a community of artists. Milo Arts hosts exhibits and outdoor installations at the nearby 934 Gallery, and live music and comedy nights happen at The Dallas at Milo. Locals can also attend MADurdays, a monthly gathering with music, studio openings and art showcases on every third Saturday of the month. 934 Gallery’s annual arts and music festival, 934 Fest, happens every September.
