Merion Village, an historic community
Merion Village is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbus, with settlers from Great Britain and Nova Scotia arriving in the early 1800s. In 1809, entrepreneur William Merion saw an opportunity for Ohio farmers and acquired 1,800 acres near the local canals and developed a port of entry along the Scioto River to bring their goods to market. This area became a magnet for European immigrants, especially Germans, and Merion Village developed a thriving economy. Today, the village rests on that same 1,800 acres of land east of the Scioto River and still bears the Merion name. Most Merion Village homes were developed in the early 20th century. “Merion Village residents have central access to the downtown, a lot of restaurants and several private schools,” says Realtor Remington Lyman, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Reafco. “The area is relatively affordable compared to neighboring places like German Village, and it’s developed a lot in the last five years."
