Surrounding the eastern Columbus suburb of Pickerington, the township of Violet has grown over the past several years, and it’s continuing as the area prepares for the influx of jobs 20 miles to the north in the New Albany area. Intel plans to open two computer chip factories in 2025 and employ more than 3,000 people. This part of east Columbus is getting popular because buyers can get more for their money. “Many buyers looking in the Columbus area hunt around at more expensive areas like Worthington and Westerville and usually settle in this area because they can get more value for the price of the home,” says Dana Thorla, a Realtor with e-Merge Real Estate with over 20 years of experience selling in the Pickerington area.
Wide variety in a growing area
Living in Violet Township has options, whether in a subdivision with newer homes or an older home on multiple acres of land. “Because of the variety of home styles, the price is going to vary as well, says Thorla. “The homes can be anywhere from around $300,000 to just over $1 million. It all depends on what you want.” The price per square foot is just under $200. The oldest homes were built in the 1970s with three to four bedrooms, a two-car garage and at least a partial basement. There are split-level, ranch-style on nearly 10 acres and more modern contemporary designs.

Great schools and an intense high school rivalry
Local students may attend Heritage Elementary School, part of the A-minus Niche-rated Pickerington Local School District. The school gets a B overalll grade on Niche. Diley Middle is rated a B-plus overall on Niche and is one school option where sixth graders can start joining programs like band or orchestra to prepare them to be a part of an award-winning high school band. The two high schools, Pickerington High School Central and Pickerington High School North are known for their marching bands and football teams. Both schools have had bands participate in prominent national parades and regional events. Both football teams have produced NFL players and have won state titles. Both schools receive A-minus grades on Niche.
Heritage Elementary School in Violet serves children from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade.
Diley Middle School earns a B grade from Niche.
Pickerington High School Central in Violet serves the students in grades 9-12.

All-purpose event center
One of the main buildings in Violet Township houses the administration offices for the township and has room to rent out for various events. The Wigwam Event Center is located near a 30-acre wooded area that used to be a private retreat area. It contains a 500-person banquet hall and an over 300-seat theater. The surrounding area outside is a popular place to book a wedding. The Violet Township government is elected Board of Trustees and an elected Fiscal Officer. The three-member board meets monthly. The township also has fire and EMS services. The closest hospital to the neighborhood is the Fairfield Medical Center River Valley Campus, 15 miles away.
All parks great and small
With over 1,600 acres, Pickerington Ponds Metro Park is nearby and offers plenty of opportunities for checking out wildlife. The park is a State Nature Preserve that serves as a habitat for over 200 species of birds. Various trails lead to overlooks, complete with binoculars to get a closer look. There’s also an opportunity to observe multiple waterfowl with wetlands and a few ponds. At 30 acres, the space at Zeller Soccer Park is still significant. There are numerous soccer fields where the Pickerington Area Soccer Association holds games and practices. There’s also playground equipment with swings and a slide. The Diley Road Softball Fields have two diamonds with covered dugouts, batting cages and plenty of parking just off the street.

Airports to the west, a lake to the east
Living in the Violet area is 15 minutes from John Glenn Columbus International Airport to the northwest. It’ll be about a 15-minute drive to the southwest to get to Rickenbacker International Airport, which has added more passenger and charger flights in recent years. However, it’s mainly a military and cargo airport. Buckeye Lake State Park is a popular tourist attraction about a 20-minute drive to the east. It’s an over 3,000-acre boating and fishing destination. It’s also Ohio’s oldest state park.
