Barnum may not have ever housed his animals here in the winter as local folklore debates, but his legacy as one of the town’s first developers is why this neighborhood still holds his name. Barnum remains a colorful community, with murals and circus-themed sculptures scattered throughout its streets. A gorilla sculpture welcomes Barnum Park visitors, while over at the Barnum Public Library, a life-sized bear sculpture named “Oso” greets readers. This sculpture’s name is a nod to the Hispanic culture established in this community over 70 years ago and noted today through specialty markets and restaurants along the main streets.

Barnum is home to several Mexican eateries, including Puerto Vallarta, where diners pull up flower-adorned seats to enjoy their spiced seafood dishes. Grandpa’s Burger Haven joins the dining options along Federal Boulevard, sending travelers off with cold milkshakes and fried onion rings to complement their burgers. When searching for last minute ingredients, specialty markets line Sheridan Boulevard from Carniceria La Mexicana to Viet Hoa Supermarket to the south. Costco is less than 2 miles from Barnum if there are certain items residents prefer to buy in bulk.

Sledding and concerts by Levitt Pavilion
Barnum residents go just beyond their neighborhood streets to find additional entertainment. Within Ruby Hill Park’s green space, sledders speed down the hill when it snows, and then when the weather warms, festivals take over the park. “Levitt Pavilion has free concerts; you sit on the grass, bring a blanket and a bottle of wine and listen to great music,” says John Valdez, a broker with Keller Williams Advantage, who has lived and sold homes in Denver for over 10 years.

Commutes from Sixth Avenue down the boulevards
Sheridan Boulevard to the west and Federal Boulevard to the east run north to the Sixth Avenue Freeway, connecting commuters with Interstate 25 and Downtown Denver 4 miles east. Gridded streets grant access to these main thoroughfares, stretching south to Alameda Avenue, where the Regional Transportation District (RTD) has bus stops. Residents may also find a place to worship in this southern stretch, with churches lining the avenue.

During the mass move from Denver into the suburbs in the 1950s, Hispanic Americans decided to settle down in Barnum. “It’s got familial status there, where people keep homes in the family and pass it down,” Valdez says. “There are still a lot of old-school families there, so it hasn’t been quite taken over like the rest of Denver.” Ranch-style homes and bungalows with wood post column porches are common in these gridded streets. Mature trees join rock gardens and shrubs in front yards, where residents park along the street or on paved driveways running up the side of the houses. While three-bedroom homes start at roughly $380,000, homebuyers find five-bedroom homes for as much as $697,000 and new single-family homes for around $760,000.

Splashing, playing and gardening on Lowell Boulevard
Outdoor recreation opportunities are scattered across Barnum Park’s 40 acres. In the southern corner, swimmers cool off in the pool and splash pad, seeking shade under picnic awnings when it is time to dry off. Residents utilize weight and cardio equipment inside the neighboring Barnum Recreation Center during workouts. Weir Gulch Trail takes walkers across the park and around the reservoir for a scenic stroll, while to the west, children climb the playground equipment and four-legged friends run free in the dog park. Meanwhile, tennis and basketball players practice their skills on the nearby courts. Gardeners tend to 54 plots filled with southern spicy peppers and other veggies at the Lowell Street Community Garden. The garden is part of the Denver Urban Gardens initiative, which is one of the country’s largest networks of community gardens and helps people from across the city learn about and contribute to growing fresh produce for their neighbors.

Building brighter minds in Barnum
Barnum students may attend classes within the Denver Public Schools district. They may begin at Newlon Elementary School, which earns a Grade B-minus from Niche, before attending Kepner Beacon Middle School in sixth grade. Niche gives Kepner Beacon a Grade C-minus and West High School a Grade C. West offers concurrent enrollment, where beginning in ninth grade, students may take concurrent enrollment classes and earn college credit through the school’s partnerships with local colleges. With the University of Denver less than 7 miles away and other Colorado colleges spread north to Boulder, students may decide to stay close to home when using those credits. As a member of Colorado, students may also apply for which they are not zoned as a part of the school choice program.
Newlon Elementary School is a public school located in southwest Denver.
West High School is also known as Denver West High School scores a C grade on Niche.
